I’m all for the 6.5prc and seriously considering a 300prc. Only problem I see is finding ammo.
Every Walmart I’ve been in this year had at least two boxes of 300 winmag. Just sayin

270 will get the job done but it could be better if it was a custom gun with a 1:8 twist. You could use 170gr bullets.

Hold up, you have a 338 and still got a 375? Are you just a masochist or did something happen that caused you to get the 375?

If you lost an elk with a 338 you would have lost him with the 375 as well.

Every deer I’ve helped track and never found was shot with a 270.

Had a .375 first and I couldn't get it to shoot like I wanted and it kicked so hard that shite kept falling off of it. Slid a scope in the mounts, front sight fell off, stock got loose. It was a pretty cheap rifle but I just had to have a .375 h&h

Sold that and got a .338 win mag model 70 which is a much nicer rifle and this one drives tacks.

The recoil isn't bad at all. Its very significantly less than the .375 was. Im going to get another 375 one day just to have one but the next one will be a 10 pound rifle.

The gun wasn't the problem. I guarantee that.

I killed a deer with mine a couple of weeks ago and I might never use anything else now. It was far less damaged than the one I saw shot with a .35 whelen a week earlier.

There's been more deer killed with this than everything in the world save a .30-06, and most likely a 30-30 as well

Written by Buffalo bore:

Many folks believe the 7MM Mag. is a super elk cartridge. I don’t. I’ve killed and seen killed, numerous elk with the mighty 7 and it certainly will kill elk, especially if your ammo selection is proper.

quote:

so if you are a trophy hunter, you need ammunition that makes a big hole and penetrates deeply for those big tough, smart bulls. We can make the 7 Mag. penetrate deeply through bullet design choice, but it will never make the size hole of a .308 caliber magnum or a .338 caliber mag.

The above comment will make 9 mm fans upset.

quote:

I’ve never lost a bull I shot up the butt, in the hips or the guts, as he was darting through dark timber, with a 338 cal. or larger bullet designed for deep penetration. (Normally Barnes TSX or Nosler Partition bullets) No matter how good the bullet design, I would never shoot an older, tougher, bull up the butt with any 7 Mag. load……..the bullet simply is not big enough to be effective as it needs to be for these circumstances.

Elk and Texas heart shots are a bad combo, regardless of caliber.

I would stay away from the 7 mag for an elk gun.

the typical 140gr. bullet is doing around 3200 fps at the muzzle, so if you fail to choose a tough controlled expansion bullet design, the softer bullets tend to over-expand or rupture and not penetrate deeply enough

There's the problem. Most guys using the 7mm rem mag for elk aren't using factory tubes shooting 140gr. They're shooting 8 to 9 twist rifles that stabilize 170 to 195gr bullets.

But with a .338 or. 375, when its the last day and the first and only chance you're gonna get, you can take it. I dont want to have that chance and concede going home empty handed.

Thats why I like the biggest gun you can tote and shoot for elk.

Everybody I know who uses a 7 mag for elk is using a factory rifle and they shoot 175gr factory loads. They haven't seen a need to get a bigger rifle yet and one of them killed an absolute bruiser last year with his.

Have been elk hunting out west for almost 8 years now and killing and recovering every time. What I can tell you is the majority of locals I hunt with in Utah use regular 270 win. I use a 7mag and have recently upgraded to a Fierce. My wife uses a .270 wby and she got there by using a locals rifle and liked it so much she now has one. She shoots 140 gr accubonds and the have not failed yet. Generally I’m a fan of the heavier the bullets the better but accuracy is king. Don’t have the expectation that you will drop the elk in its tracks. I have not seen this happen pretty much ever even with a 300. You will most likely have to shoot the animal multiple times. That being said if you get a good hit with a smaller caliber/ lighter bullet you will have a opportunity for a follow up vs a poor hit with a cannon. You need a rifle you are comfortable with and is accurate and repeatable. Factory ammo is probably the biggest concern you will have as repeatability will sometimes be lacking.
