How boring of a state is Virginia?

In my opinion, Virginia, and Virginians, are about as boring and "plain Jane" as they come. They are in that Middle-Atlantic armpit where they lack (or lost) a lot of authenticity in Southern culture and aren't quite as brash as the New Englanders.
Sure, most everything there is surface-level nice and appealing, but the state lacks any balls and edginess. It's perfect for a Garden & Gun feature, and I don't doubt that it's a nice place to live, grow up, and raise a family in. However, it comes across as nothing more than dull, suburban living.

I was actually staying at the Fan not too long ago. It inspired this thread. Richmond is a mere retirement village in comparison to New Orleans, Charleston, Nashville, Savannah, Memphis, and so forth.

Spent a few weeks in Norfolk talking to locals. The only cool people I met were the brash as hell transplants from the upper east coast.

A lot of history in Virginia and virginians are proud of their state, kinda like Texans are. NOVA has a lot of stuff going on but it's hard when the biggest metro isn't technically in the state (Washington DC, which is very vibrant)

It sounds like you're talking about Northern Virginia, the DC metro area. I lived in Western VA along the I-81 corridor and absolutely loved the outdoors there in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The hiking and mountain biking were exceptional. If there were more direct flights from there I could have lived there long term.

Virginia is a beautiful state packed full of history. I have family there that goes back generations and they are all very proud of their heritage. There's an identity that goes along with Virginia that no other state can claim.

I'm a history buff so I absolutely love Virginia. I live in Alexandria and the night life (when we aren't shuttered by pandemics) is fairly vibrant in Old Town.
