6 people indicted, one already plead guilty to other charges

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A doctor who shut down his North Alabama pain clinics after being accused of over-prescribing pills has been indicted on federal charges.
Six other people were indicted along with Lewisburg, Tenn., Dr. Mark Murphy in the Northern District of Alabama in what federal prosecutors say was a $41 million health care fraud scheme.
quote:
Murphy and his wife Jennifer, both 63, are accused of using their Alabama clinics, North Alabama Pain Specialists, to unlawfully distribute drugs and to develop a large patient group they could use to profit from medically unnecessary services. The clinics operated in Madison and Decatur.
In addition to the Murphys, prosecutors charged Brian Bowman, 39, of Attalla; Christie Rollins, 49, of Petersburg, Tenn.; Mark Murphy Jr., 33, of Lewisburg; and Willie Frank Murphy, 67, of Lewisburg. They are all accused of conspiring to receive $41 million in kickbacks for items and services that weren’t medically necessary.
quote:
Among the things unnecessarily prescribed were medical office visits, drug screens, medical equipment, high-reimbursing prescription drugs and nerve conduction studies, authorities said. In some cases, prosecutors said, those items and services weren’t even provided.

I can’t even describe the evil involved in this. They likely made thousands of people dependent on narcotics unnecessarily.

And his license to practice wasn't even technically revoked in AL. He just shut down his practice before they could revoke his license and moved to TN where he could still practice legally and with no restrictions.

Moving your practice across the state line doesn't allow you to escape federal charges.

It did allow him to avoid officially having his license yanked in Alabama, and allowed him to continue practicing in Tennessee, because they didn't give a damn what he did elsewhere. I don't think the state even looked into him at all.

Half way between Nashville and Huntsville and convenient to Interstate 65.
Really wish for vigilante justice for the lives they have ruined.

Tennessee is more corrupt than Illinois, per capita.
It's just not as well-publicized.

If you're gonna make a claim for the title, I demand a link.

If you crime is such small potatoes you can get in deep trouble. Think big, scammers.

Pretty sure I've hung out with that Brian Bowman guy. Friend of a friend deal. Didn't seem like the type to get caught up in something like this, but that's what everyone says.
ETA - Yep, the Facebook confirms it. Played golf with him and the mutual friend a year or so ago. I think he said at the time he was in medical device sales so wondering how he got caught up in this.

41 million is chump change compared to the Tri-care pain cream fraud scheme.

I know him. Not well but I used to call on all these same doctors since I worked for a competitor of Brains company. Hes not a bad dude but I know for a fact he was breaking the law and committing insurance fraud via urine drug screens. He had several clinics he was working with so I'm sure more doctors will be getting arrested/charged at some point in the future.
He built a 15,000 sg ft house in Gadsden on the TN river which it sounds like the government is seizing.

That was massive. Keep in mind though that this one is just for one doctor/clinic.
This Bowman cat had clinics all over the state, and the lab he worked with, Compass, had hundreds of clinics they serviced throughout Al, TN and MS. Not saying all were complicit but if at least 10% were then the fraud could easily get into the billions.

Looks like he had a nice family. Feel bad for his kids and wife if she didn't know
