Where do you find these garage sales? I rarely find out about them unless I happen to be driving by, and when I do, all they ever have are baby toys, 90’s board games, crappy furniture, and maternity clothes.

On eBay you should be able to sell the D40 for about $50-$60 and the 18-70 lens for about $50-$75.
I've never used a D40 (6mp), but my first DSLR was a D40x (10mp) that my dad gave me. I also had an 18-70, which was a good lens, a step up from the first 18-55 kit lens. No VR, though.
