What has happened to HBO?

They have almost no new original series' that look worth watching. The raised by wolves trailer looked pretty cool, but other than that it appears that they are really going down the drain.
Coastal Elites & We Are Who We Are both look trash.
Is the third day any good?

Have you heard of Covid?

They make a great 1st season of programming.
Then it gets over with an audience, and instead of the people who made it successful continuing to move forward..the success draws attention from everyone, and everyone there has to micromanage, give input and make it "acceptable to a wider audience"..or AKA shooting themselves in the foot.

As others have pointed out, COVID has really slowed down TV production. However, there are also 2 bigger picture answers to your question
1) AT&T bought HBO's parent company and HBO CEO Richard Plepler decided it was time to leave. That was February of 2019.
2) HBO used to be the main network trying to do what it does. Now every streamer is trying to become HBO so there's a lot of competition for new shows.

Succession? Please don’t tell me it has been cancelled.

This show is awesome so far. I can't believe they relegated it to HBO Max. It's definitely good enough to be on regular HBO.

Haven’t been able to film since February. We are going to be in a drought for a while with no new content. Be ready to watch all the Netflix original movies that have been sitting on the shelves for a few years

ATT is going to screw it up beyond imaginable
NY Times Article on HBO take over by ATT in 2018
quote:
“It’s going to be a tough year,” Mr. Stankey said. “It’s going to be a lot of work to alter and change direction a little bit.”
quote:
Continuing the theme, he added: “I want more hours of engagement. Why are more hours of engagement important? Because you get more data and information about a customer that then allows you to do things like monetize through alternate models of advertising as well as subscriptions, which I think is very important to play in tomorrow’s world.”
quote:
Mr. Stankey also said that the network’s number of subscribers — 40 million in the United States, out of 142 million worldwide — was not going to cut it. HBO will have to find a way “to move beyond 35 to 40 percent penetration to have this become a much more common product,” he said, referring to its current market size.

Lovecraft Country is one of the best shows on television. Other than that, I’m not really sure what they have for originals currently airing.

Currently completing my first watch of "The Wire."

AT&T happened. Cleaned out senior management. Merged w other divisions.
Wanting higher penetration means lowering the quality of programming. Seen it happen over and over. USA, TNN, etc.

I'm not usually big on the supernatural stuff, but the first episode has my attention. Jude Law is strong, and some of the islanders are interesting.
I read that the first 3 (of 6) episodes focus on the Jude Law character, then the next ones shift focus to other characters. Not sure if it all comes together in the end.
It's set in Osea Island, which is a real island of the coast of England that is accessible by a road that goes under water twice a day. You have to wait for the tide to get in or out. It has an interesting history, and some of it is worked into the show.
