Unless he's a cancer, which I have never heard anyone say about Shelvin, you don't keep him from returning IF he's committed to busting it hard and being ready for at least mid-season games. We need the experience and depth, and I assume Coach O will be pushing him hard to make up for lost time/practice to ensure that the other players don't feel slighted - maybe benched for the first 2-3 games??

A player that opted out to go to the NFL is not going to return to the team if he has to sit out games

Would Farrell slide in at the SDE position? Ideally you would want to have him and Logan on the field at the same time, but as of now they pretty much have the same body size. 320 pounds is a little heavy to be playing the SDE position.

Since we're all just guessing like fricking idiots, my guess is that motherfricker is ready right now, to rip State's QB's head off and shite down his neck hole. Let's Geaux, large baw!

Before he opted out the word was he was trimming back to 300 to play DE. Either way he was statistically our best DL last year and a great addition to the DL if this true.

Brody also said that a section of the team during the team vote was hesitant about letting Farrell back too.
quote:

Farrell though, unless more is there than what we know, I wouldn't have that big of an issue with as a teammate. I mean his reasons seemed more than understandable considering the current climate. And I get being a bit disgruntled over the thought that you've been there grinding in the summer heat the whole time while he sat on the couch; but you should still be understanding in this situation. In my opinion anyway.
Have to earn it. The reasons why he opt'd out will determine to a large extent how much he has to do to earn it (from both his teammates and the staff). His primary reason was concerns for his family (mainly grandmother) and to a lesser degree himself (since his it was in his family). Because of that reason, his path to earning it is quite easy.

And let's not pretend either, the greater the need the lesser that dues. They know Farrell is needed more than anyone. As long as he didn't spend his time off going neck deep into hookers and blow (which he didn't, that's joking hyperbole) as simple explanation and a promise that he's indeed changed his mind and is all-in for the season in entirety he's good to go.

The biggest concern for his teammates will be two fold:

1. Most importantly, if he's not all in for the duration then the team will suffer due to losing experience and reps for his replacement that will hit them at the worst possible time [late(er) in the season].

2. That he's not prepared and the DL play, and thus the entire team, will suffer.... possibly in the win/losses column.

ETA: and now I hope he comes back and sets sack records and get's a very high draft pick!

That would be a huge boost.

Glad Neil's grandma is doing better, and really glad to have him back. I'd image that it will be at around a month before he's ready for extended game duty, which puts him ready for a little extra work against Mizzou and a full go for Florida.

I would really like to have Shelvin back, too. But, his inconsistency with weight may indicate his unwillingness to put in the work...and why the locker room may have some issue with him. Whatever happens, happens.

In hindsight, I was overly critical of Farrell's decision as he seems to have had legitimate concerns and planned to come back next year. If he doesn't play this year, I still question his ability to hold onto a solid depth spot with all the talent LSU brings in.

As for Shevlin, I still don't understand his rationale for sitting and saying he'll prepare for the draft. The dude needs to play! The NFL is not hot for 375lbs DLs. He needs to play to improve his stock and he seriously needs to lose 40-50 pounds. Sitting out will likely be the end of his football career. Point blank.

Incredible natural talent, but O’s had to cattle-prod him from day one. He’s not self-motivated to reach his potential...and other players busting butt see it too.
Moffitt/O will say as much to NFL scouts, coaches, GM’s, etc. when they call...

If he’s 375 right now he won’t be able to get in shape this year.

He is NOT a finished product and will not get many snaps if any at 375. Especially being that heavy after opting out. He is a first round talent but not at 375. You dont sacrifice the locker room for a guy that bailed. They have accepted it and moved on. They are prepared to go without him.If he opts back and they allow it, he should expect to play no sooner than mid season IF he gets his weight under control. He mad a TERRIBLE decision to opt out. I dont care what his daddy says.
