What's the scoop? I average one a day. Have caught some flack from some health nut friends who swear diet sodas will cause long term health issues

I heard they cause duplicate posts. Not sure if true or not.

Meh. NBD. One a day certainly won't do anything.
Aspartame is one of the most well-studied substances we have.. it's very safe.
I wouldn't advise anyone drink a 12 pack a day, because everything should be in moderation, but if you enjoy a diet drink a day, have at it.

There could be something to the fact that your body thinks something sweet is coming so puts out some insulin but then there is nothing for the insulin to do. Probably a much bigger problem for those people drinking 10 a day, if there even is anything to it.

Bruh, you realize how many duplicate threads are on this board?

So aspartame is the really the only substance in a diet soda that would be a cause for concern?

I was curious so I did blood sugar test for a week straight after using artificial sweeteners. I did a base test first thing in the morning, then drank coffee or a diet drink, then tested again 30 minutes later. I didn’t see any spikes in my blood sugar levels. I think only pre-diabetic people have an issue with this. I would still limit the amount of diet sodas every day.

That's what most people are concerned with. Otherwise it's just flavorings, colorings, preservatives, and salt.

Your body doesn’t produce insulin based on taste buds.

They are most certainly not good for you. I'd say once a day is too much. The ingredients are unnatural chemicals that will most likely cause inflammation. Unless you are exactly where you want to be health and fitness-wise, I would seriously cut back. And yes, artificial sweeteners do cause insulin release; this has been studied.
This healthline article is also helpful at explaining the negative effects of artificial sweeteners

No real harm (assuming 1-2 a day), but if you're trying to live a healthy lifestyle they're really just pointless.

I definitely eat more when I drink a carbonated drink with my meal.

Diet Coke isn't keeping a single person on earth from reaching their health and fitness goals.

No type of soda is "good" for you but as long as you limit yourself to 1 a day (or less) on average, then I think you're ok.
Then again, Trump drinks 16 per day according to Bill O'Reilly's book and he's in his 70s.

I'm in pretty damn good shape. Just more worried about any long term side effects. Sounds like one a day is perfectly fine

This is why getting health and fitness info from a forum is a minefield. Currently, this post has an 8 to 1 upvote ratio and it is factually wrong.
Emphasis mine:
"The pre-absorptive cephalic phase of insulin secretion lasts for around 10 min and is initiated by the anticipatory sight, smell and taste of food and further enhanced by chewing and swallowing the food"

Keep in mind, one of them said that your body would produce insulin after drinking a sugar free drink

I always argued that there was nothing wrong with diet sodas. Prob had 2-4 a day. Once I gave it a test run and cut them out though I shed 10 lbs in a month which is a lot of weight for me.

Forgive me for asking a stupid question but how did you lose weight by not drinking a 0 calorie drink?
I’m drink a few a day & am curious since it’s not cutting calories
