We had the right force mix early on with SOF and CIA. When we started to introduce conventional forces and create a "theater" is where we lost the initiative.

Right we would have been real popular with everyone else in the world had we used nuclear weapons......for the 2nd time in history. The first time was justified but our nuclear weapons now are purely for deterrence now. We wouldn’t just use them as an offensive weapon that’s asking for nuclear war. You’re not very bright are you?

The USA had a blank check from anyone that could have done anything to us in administering the justice we saw fit.

No country was going to mess with us if we would have nuked them.

Do you think the Russians or Chinese would have had sympathy for the Muslims?

You can’t just go nuke people because we are the big dog on the block. That makes us look like tyrants. Our military was and is plenty capable of going in and taking out the Taliban and Isis and everyone else if they weren’t constructed in how they have to conduct the war. We don’t need our nukes to destroy them. We have an Air Force and navy that can stand against any country and our Marines and Rangers are the best infantry troops on earth.

What really gets my goat about Afghanistan is that we learned nothing from watching the Russians struggle in that shite hole for 10 years and then say frick it and pull out. History can be cruel when you don’t pay attention.

Are you a child or teenager or something? Any reasonable adult would not think like you.

Question. What happens when we nuke Afghanistan or Iraq or Iran like you say we can and say China or Russia gets scared they are next or gets pissed about what we did? What then? Do we nuke them too because we are badasses? What then? Nuclear winter and the end of the world is what happens. Mutually assured destruction must not mean anything to you.

They'd have been happy we were nuking Muslims so they didn't have to deal with them.

And they would also wonder if they were next since we just go and nuke one of our enemies so what’s stopping us from nuking them next?

We really had no choice but to go to Afghanistan. Someone needed to get their arse kicked after 9/11. Should have kicked arse and rolled out

We fell right into the endless war trap though and that needs to end now

Doesn't matter.

We probably avoid the Patriot Act if we nuke them and be done with it.

The only appropriate response would have been to go into Afghanistan and destroy al Quada then leave. A swift arse kicking. With mass casualties to their people.

No rebuilding or anything. Just a fair warning not to frick with us.

Hindsight is 20/20 though

But the problem wasn't just al Qaeda. It was equally the Taliban "government" of Afghanistan that had allowed al Qaeda to operate and train and scheme from within its country with impunity. Overarching problem being "what next" once the Taliban were unseated, leaving basically ungoverned destruction.

As an OIF & OEF Veteran, I support the missions in Afghanistan, but hate Bush everyday for Iraq. shite my neighbor was the first one to get killed in Operation Inherent resolve when we were fricking around in Iraq and Syria, thanks Obama.

The true enemy should've been Saudi Arabia though.

The overwhelming majority of the 9/11 jihadists were Saudi nationals...and we invaded Iraq. The current crisis continues until we end our corrupt military and economic pact with the House of Saud.

The USA was forced to go after Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Otherwise they would have continued to use the country as a safe base of operations to continue attacks against the West. The methods we used were effective and accomplished the goal of eliminating the country as the base for Bin Laden and his gang with a minimum of American blood shed.

But Afghanistan has long frustrated would be conquerors. In spite of our best efforts history is repeating itself.

Going into Afghanistan to take out Al Qaeda, was understandable.

I think the vast majority of posters here agree on that point. Yet why are we occupying that 3rd world hellhole nearly ten years after Osama bin Laden was killed?
