Looking to purchase a 22 mag to carry during squirrel season to shoot pigs I use a 22 lr for squirrels and it will Kill a pig but I don’t want to have to shoot it 20 times to do so

Any recommendations?

pistol or rifle?

Pistol - Ruger Single six with both .22lr cylinder and a .22mag cylinder.

Rifle? Not sure, I don't have one but would look at Savage (though I hate their magazine latch with a passion), marlin, ruger or if you wanted to spend more a CZ

Rifle I am thinking

Someone posted about one a few months ago. Maybe a CZ where you could change out barrels to switch calibers?

I have a Winchester 9422m and it is my favorite rifle. Not the least expensive but worth the money.

22 mag will work, but shot placement is everything if you want a find it after it dies.

I do not think you can beat the keltec CMR 30 for what you are describing, it is light weight and holds 30 rounds in the mag.

Shot placement becomes less important if you can put 15 rounds into it

I wouldn’t be against a .17 or something if that has more killing power. Not familiar with them too much.

Ear hole a pig with a .17 and it will drop.

How about a Ruger Single Six with 9.5" barrel. Going from 6 to 9.5" gives you a nice jump in ballistics and get you pretty close to rifle velocities and energy.

Scope it and you can just swap out cylinders depending on if you need to shoot a hog or squirrel.

On second thought, I think I would rather have faster follow up shots than a single action revolver would allow if the hog turned my way instead of the other way if the shot didn't bring it down.

What about carrying one gun for both squirrels and hogs. I've got a buddy who slays hogs with a .17 HMR. I don't think he's killing 350 lb boar hogs but certainly good eating size hogs. He swears by the Hornady 20gr FMJ round. Says it doesn't tear up a squirrel like the ballistic tip rounds but a well placed shot will kill a hog easily.

I have a Marlin .17 HMR. I haven't hunted with it but can say it's a tack driver on paper. Shoots a lot flatter than a .22LR. A squirrel wouldn't be safe inside 100 yds. unless there's a really strong crosswind. Not likely to happen in the woods, and if the wind is blowing really hard I'm taking my shotgun anyway.

.22 mag > .17 when it comes to horsepower. The little 22 mag is pretty potent compared to. 22 lr

Eta: just saw the comment about shooting squirrels. Stick to a normal .22 and headshoot both the squirrels and hogs. .22 mag and .17 will both grenade squirrels.

I keep a Marlin 983 with me for pigs. It's the most accurate rifle I own and I've killed a pile of pigs with it. I also used it for the May squirrel season and had very few issues with messing up the squirrels, provided I hit them in the head or center punched their chest.

My dad gave me one for my 16th Birthday. Best Bday present ever. I have a compact 6X leupold on it. My favorite as well. They are pretty pricey now.

I have a Ruger American 22 wmr. I've killed 1 pig Monday and 3 pigs this morning with it so far this year. Killed 16 last year. 22 wmr is an awesome round. I usually headshot them but I had a full pass through last year on a 100 lb sows shoulder. Marlin and Savage make nice rifles as well.

I use 22 wmr CCI 40 gr gamepoints. A headshot on a squirrel does less damage than you'd think. The bullet stays together and punches a pretty neat hole.

A 17 is a fun gun to shoot but a 22 wmr is far more practical as a hunting rifle.

I would be carrying two guns. My 22 lr and just packing the other as well. Or just carrying it with me while lil Ron shoots squirrels and we run across some pigs. .17 or a 22 mag does a little too much damage to a squirrel if you don’t hit the head

Thanks for responses

Marlin used to make a .22 Magnum lever action. I know because I have one - have had it for a l-o-n-g time - holds (I think) 15 rounds. Without going to dig it out of the safe, I think it's a Model 57-M.

I have no idea if they still make a lever action, but I do know that used ones like mine pop every now & then on Gunbroker. This rifle has a very short "throw" (arc of movement of the lever), and it's a little on the heavy side (probably would want a sling. Mine is incredibly accurate (last time I checked the zero of the scope it shot a 3 round "cloverleaf" at 100 yards).

Also seems like Henry used to make a .22 magnum lever action. Never held or seen one of theirs.
