Do you have to know about Dr. Who to follow it? I haven’t gotten into Dr. Who.

Not at all. The Doctor is referenced a few times but you don't need to watch the series. The only thing I will offer is the main character, "Captain Jack Harkness", has a unique feature about him that was created out of the Doctor Who series but its not really relevant to the show.

I may have to go back and watch it. Season three was the best although it was shorten to 5 episode due a writers strike as I recall, but damn was it solid.

It's exciting, silly, funny, serious and tragic and the ensemble cast is fantastic.

Happy Valley and Shetland are a couple of other good detective shows that haven’t been mentioned.

Endeavor.

It's a prequel to Inspector Morse.

Last Tango in Halifax (on Netflix now)

Shot in Yorkshire, so nice countryside scenes. Two widowed childhood sweethearts fall for each other when they are reunited over the Internet after nearly 60 years. Then their families start to intermingle, and various dramas and romances ensue.

The lead actress from Happy Valley is in this one too.

Van der Valk. PBS. Sunday, September 13, 8 p.m.

New British series about Amsterdam cops. Starts this Sunday night. Saw a good review that says it’s not your typical PBS fare.

Vicious - sitcom. can find on Youtube.

Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi head the cast of this studio sitcom, centered around aging partners Freddie and Stuart, who have lived together in a London flat for close to 50 years. Having survived a time when being a gay couple was harshly frowned upon, they have learned to keep the outside world at bay, and their lives now consist of reading books, walking their dog and, most of all, bickering at each other.

Very funny, and a surprise regular, Ramsey Bolton.

Freaked me out to see him in a sitcom.

Ripper Street

Similar to Sherlock Holmes without the “super powers”

If you want to watch a pretty good one then try Hinterland on Netflix. Just know that every character in the show has got issues and nobody ever smiles.

Also try Bordertown on Netflix also. But it's Finnish so your likely going to need CCs auto translated to English. Young Wallander maybe??

I enjoyed Outlander on Netflix. Was a STARZ series with 99% UK cast.

If you are open to time-travel (1940s to 1750s), Scottish rebellion vs Brit Empire, and a complicated love triangle, this might do the trick.

Accents get thick. Subtitles recommended.
