Can you think of someone who everyone knows but almost just became a footnote?

Dwight Eisenhower comes to mind. It’s been awhile since I read the biography so the specifics escapes me but I remember he was a really good football coach and the army wanted to keep him in his current location so he could keep coaching. I forget the reason why but he had to go above and beyond to get the army to reallocate him to somewhere where he could make the most out of his career.

Herschel Walker wanted to enlist in the Marines rather than play football but others persuaded him not to.

Audie Murphy. Dropout with a middle school education. Turned down from enlisting several times for being underweight. Finally gets in and becomes the most badass military guy ever.

Todd Graves. Boilermaker and sockeye salmon fisherman to raise capital after everyone told him his business plan sucked. Took the risk and has one of the fastest growing chains in the nation.

Ed Orgeron. Lifetime position coach, became literally the worst head coach in Ole Miss history. Bounced around to the Saints, Tennessee, looked like he was going to get a shot at being the head guy at USC after a stint there. Passed over again and came to LSU. Les gets shite canned and Ed assembles the greatest team in the history of college football.

Every city in the South should have a statue up of whoever invented the air conditioner.

Also fascinating are people who are famous but never knew it.

Van Gogh sold only one painting while he was alive and died a penniless vagrant. Now, everything he ever painted is worth more than $100 million. Edgar Allen Poe was a similar failure until after his death.
