White Star Market - Government Street

Passed it earlier and it looks like Mayor Broome has her campaign headquarters there because her signs are all over one of the offices.
White Star Market was supposed to be a collection of small businesses, but that doesn't appear to be the case at the moment. Where there aren't Broome signs, there are for lease signs. The juxtaposition of the two is a great illustration of where Baton Rouge is right now.
So is White Star Market already a thing of the past?

Yeah I think it shut down very early on in COVID.

Ironically its the crown jewel of the evil mid city gentrification

I saw Gravy in that office the other day

I think it's out of business already.
It was a cool concept.
Sad to see it go.

Those dining halls are hit or miss in every city.

Hated to see it close. Excellent happy hour at the bar there and plenty of good food

JBE killed most of the businesses in there with Covid restrictions.

That’s a travesty IMO... I loved White Star Market, especially the ramen at Chow Yum Phat, and grabbing a brew at the bar there. Great concept. I think Chow Yum Phat is still open in Southdowns, or at least I hope they still are.

You been to chow yum phat yet? We went today first time. Damn it’s good

Yeah it’s still open by George’s under the overpass. Still delicious.

It was super cool but the problem with incubator spaces like that is the companies get a following and then expand beyond what the facility is set up for. I think a single restaurant group could do multiple concepts with a bar in the middle to tie it all together. Then you don’t need to worry about businesses leaving.

Nope, I'm going to have to try it.

Covid killed it
It was dying before. Covid was the final nail in the coffin.
Honestly it had the opportunity to do ok with COVID had it been managed properly. Cloud kitchen concept could’ve worked well.

And as they continue to restrict traffic flow on govt street, others will follow.
