White Star Market was supposed to be a collection of small businesses, but that doesn't appear to be the case at the moment.

I knew one of the business owners that was in there. The guy who owned White Star was an idiot then corona was the final straw that forced them to close for good. So yeah, thing of the past.

Horribly inaccurate.

I knew two vendor owners from White Star, both said their businesses were fine prior to covid. They were not making a fortune but they were able to get their businesses started for next to nothing. That's the whole point.

I have a friend in NoLA who sells products that are bought by vendors in several of the food halls in New Orleans. Said all are getting destroyed by the capacity restrictions of Phase 1, 2 etc.

If anything it looks like this food hall was right to close early on and cut its losses.

I think the place was overhyped and they definitely had issues keeping businesses in there. I think it could have survived for the remainder of the year but for covid. I don’t think it had much of a shelf life past that.

Government has improved greatly over the last ten years. However, many of these places will unfortunately shut down in the near future. I cannot see red stick social making it. Great concept with bad luck. Elsie’s will be fine. Radio bar will likely survive. Superior has been there forever and will survive. A few other places may make it. I’m not sure changing the structure of the street will have its desired affect.

Red Stick social seemed like a really interesting concept with an awful location and horrendous execution.

I agree Government St will see further closures, as will likely all areas of Baton Rouge.

As for White Star vendors, the ones that put out a good product that I went to seemed to have plenty of staying power. I'd imagine in a town like Baton Rouge there are plenty of inexperienced operators who get in a food hall and quickly fail. It might take longer to fail in a dense city like Chicago, but in Baton Rouge it wouldn't take long at all.

The Broome administration has been nothing short of horrible for small business owners in Baton Rouge. She’s pretty much killed Third Street too.

For the love of God, please vote this woman out of office. Baton Rouge can’t take four more years of her.

This guy gets it.

Does anybody remember Catfish Town in the mid-1980's? Fun place with lots of restaurants, shops, and bars. It didn't last too long, either.

I was thinking about the whole Catfish Town concept in relation to the Government Street "vision" as well. It is a perfect analogy. Very similar hype for both.

This type of business model will not work in this city. Exceptional businesses with exceptional products will survive and thrive, however.
Prove me wrong.

Why? White Star market died mostly because the successful vendors left to move to thier own solo locations then Covid hit. . It was always crowded. No reason to think it won't come back.

Government St restaurant scene was booming prior to Covid and will after Covid. No greater effect than anywhere in the City, maybe less due to the built in yuppie/hipster population ( capital heights etc.).
Have you been to the Beer Garden? It's always crowded.

Have you driven Mid City Government Street since the changes? It's working very well.

Once they get the landscaping in it will look great too.

Take a picture, send it to her office & ask about her specific plan to rebuild small businesses in BR.
You won't get an answer. She has none. Racism is her entire platform.

They were trying to sell those condos for $200k, I think now they're just trying to lease them.

the death blow for catfish town was other bars complaining that they could not sell alcohol to go. Catfish town had a food hall with entertainment and seating outside. When the city ruled "no alcohol outside" it died overnight.

I still think the concept of white star is great. It’s a perfect idea for restaurants to test out a concept for a business without having to commit a shite load of money to a brick and mortar. COVID killed it but if that area ever becomes a true (Semi-safe) walking area with all that residential so close by, it will be successful.

I should say I'm located on Government st. and went back and forth for years if the drop down to two lanes was good idea or not. But it looks like they did it just right. The choke point would have been Foster intersection and they kept that 4 lane. Also they put a left turn arrow at Govt West bound and Acadian going south.

Also before it was a major bitch to take a left out of the side streets. Now it's easy. Just jump into the median and wait for traffic to pass.

Me like.

I'm not located on it, but I travel on it a fair bit. It's taking me a little bit of time to re-map the businesses I can and can't turn left directly into, but overall, I think it's going to work exactly as intended.

And dear god, do I love me that roundabout at Government/Lobdell...

It closed down earlier this year. The owners and vendors couldn’t come to terms with a deal because of COVID. Oddly that Broome is there because one of the owners is a huge St. George supporter. But I guess having a tenant is better than not.

Those dining halls are cool, but their main audience is a group of young professionals stopping by on their lunch break. Baton Rouge doesn't have a large population of that demographic, and the ones that do live here don't really work in that part of town.

As I understand it, it's closed for good....they could not pay the rent due to covid.
And was an awesome thing for BR!

Don’t worry, guys. Hollywood Casino is building their land based casino. Comes equipped with Shaq’s fried chicken and daiquiri shop. All of downtown is about to be culturally enriched beyond anything we’ve seen.

It'll reopen down the road. It's easy to get vendors...just hard to keep the good ones.

Agreed. I can't for the life of me get what all the complaining is about with this project. Government street looks about 1000x nicer than it ever has. If people don't want the slower pace to get downtown, just jump one street over to Florida. I seriously don't get it.
