I vaguely remember being on the bridge for the debut when I was 4 in 1993. It was an iconic part of the Shreveport skyline...for about 3 months. They didn't account for the vibration of the bridge reeking havoc on the glass tubes which broke many of them. Many more burned out and it was cost prohibitive to replace them so most of the memories and photos of the bridge are of a partially lit mishmash.

But a local donor donated $1 million to install new LEDs.

quote:

But Shreveport Regional Arts Council Executive Director Pam Atchison was able to publicly identify Dr. George Bakowski, a Shreveport optometrist, as the man with the 2020 vision to see the former Texas Street Neon Bridge become the LED Bakowski Bridge of Lights.

Totally unnecessary but I'll admit the kid in me is excited to see the bridge all lit up again. When I was young, I always loved driving over the Neon bridge.

the night they turned the bridge on it had lights that didnt work.

but installing a a huge pixel array on a bridge would be badass.

Good. My hometown needs a little something to lift the spirits. Nothing good has happened there in decades.

I remember watching the original light up ceremony. It was such a big deal in town and we watched it from my dad's office in the CNB building. I vividly remember the comment he made right after it was lit.

He said, "That's it? I could have given 3 Mexicans $500 and some Christmas lights, and they could have made it look better."

That should solve all of Shreveport's problems.

frick yeah. As a child I remember that bridge fondly and was always in awe crossing over it. Thought it was the coolest damn thing.

Bawkoski lives in a badass house in south highlands.

Lol I was on the bridge along with a ton of others on opening night. Pretty sure about a total of five lights actually lit up. Definitely a “Stonehenge” from spinal tap moment.

They've been working on it a long time. They sanded and repainted the whole thing over the last year or so. They finally put a turn signal at the base of the bridge where HWY 80 turns left on to HWY 1 on the Shreveport side. That was a major cluster as long as I can remember.

I'll never understand people with this type of attitude. Just because the city has issues like most mid-sized Southern cities, we can't have something nice to look at every once in a while?

Besides half of the funding is coming from a private donor, and the other half coming from the Red River Waterway Commission. Neither are entities responsible for cleaning up the streets.

How much to have Texas formally adopt the festering wound that is Shreveport?

No reasonable offer will not be accepted.

If they lit up the Horace Wilkinson bridge like that it would snarl traffic all the way back to Beaumont.

I hope they do a better job this time. The last time they lit it was such a let down.
