Sister ran an upscale store on Royal St. for 10+ yrs. When R.N. & his cronies took over, she said that almost every city inspector, of which they were / are ever growing in number, walked in the door with their hands out..."or else!". Same with the average beat cop, selling "quality security".

Sadly the Judicial system is the same way

Tell them what the demographics are, if they are smart, they should be able to figure it out.

Only town I’ve lived in where instead of counting on one hand your friends who had been victimized by crime, ....you count which ones hadn’t.

My brother was asking how the federal government hasn’t essentially eviscerated the NOLA city government and started it totally over.
The police department is under federal consent decree.
The city jail is under a separate federal consent decree.
One former mayor just got out of federal prison due to Covid.
Current city councilman, who is running for District Attorney, is under federal indictment

Trying to explain corruption in New Orleans to my OOS family
I just live it vicariously through the OT and my aunt and uncle.
They moved from New Roads to West Monroe. Was that an improvement?

Just happened across this video today from the 1940's about New Orleans. Listen to how New Orleans was spoken about then, and imagine how far it fell.
Oh boy how shite has changed

Chicago is significantly worse. I got out in 2017 when I got a divorce and came down here. It's corrupt but not as bad down here.
That said Covid shows what happens when a huge problem hits a corrupt town - it pops. Basic services stop. Cities like New York and Chicago have some intrinsic industry. Do we? It remains to be seen. Atlanta took business away long ago, Houston took oil away, and Charleston took tourism away. We never fought back.

They had a chance in the wake of Katrina. Nobody would have said much.

New Roads isn't a bad little town. Not much to do but fish though.

I just remember they had a really awesome old victorian house that was supposedly haunted. Uncle had just graduated from LSU with his chiropractor degree (trashy, I know). He was originally from New Roads and his parents still live there.
Now that I think about it, wonder if my uncle is on this forum....

In the 50's, 60's, early 70's it was mafia run. The mafia had the smarts to know where the line was on extortion when it came to corporate business. In comes the likes of Moon Landrieu, Morial, Barthelemy, etc. and it was a full on shakedown of corporate business. Adios business culture(permanent dollars residing there), hello tourism(temporary dollars in and out). Well done NOLA, once remembered as a jewel of the South, now just a stain on the South.

You’ll have to teach them about 180 years worth of Louisiana history for them to understand.

Just tell them to check out Wikipedia page of pretty much any African country government. They are run in a similar way to New Orleans. I’m not trying to make a point about race, it’s just that those governments and the New Orleans government are riddled with the same kind of corruption and incompetence.
