LSU could lose up to $80M if football is canceled, university president says

LSU leaders say the school is facing a steep loss if the SEC follows the Big 10 and Pac-12 conferences in canceling fall sports.
University President Thomas Galligan said Friday that missing the fall college football season could have a $60-80 million impact on the school's revenue, especially affecting the athletics budget. If that were to happen, Galligan said the university would have to "figure it out" in order to make up some of the lost ground.
"I think we'll go back to square one with everything," Galligan said. "And even though that's a lot of money, we're gonna put safety first."
Galligan said he and other officials are meeting with SEC leaders every week to discuss the situation.
Ticket sales, parking fees, endorsements, and concession sales all add up to serious money, on top of the financial blow schools already face from COVID-19. Since the pandemic began, the president says the school has already spent about $12 million.
"We're getting the best medical advice that we could possibly get. What we did earlier was we said lets restart and push the season back until the 26th of September."
LSU has since introduced cost-cutting measures like hiring freezes and restricting travel to help limit the losses.

$12 million on what?

now multiply that for every school in the SEC, and you've got an immense crisis
all scholarship sports outside of basketball and football and whatever the most profitable women's sports to satisfy Title IX requirements will be dropped and coaching salaries will begin to be tightened dramatically as we enter a new paradigm

These schools need major layoffs anyway.

Not lose 80 million just not make 80 million. No one is taking 80 million from LSU thus they didn’t lose it

Almost all of that profit was going to have an outflow designated for it that now will see no money. Salaries, scholarships, facilities and upkeep, transportation costs, utility costs; it's a pretty big deal.

What’s 80 million and college football when we can have this delightful Committee of Karen and never- ending scare - mongering and finger- wagging?
Posted on 8/15/20 at 3:13 pm to tduecen
This goes for nearly every large NCAA school

of course not, but when you tighten the belt and are forced to keep some of them alive due to Title IX, find the ones that don't lose that much money.
I'm assuming softball and women's basketball out-earn women's soccer, for example.

I believe women’s basketball loses the most money out of all the programs

Next few years teams will quit taking those long trips, like didn't LSU play overseas a few seasons ago in basketball?
Hawaii may have to cancel everything because of how much they spend traveling for games.

You don’t hear the University of Louisiana complaining

So how much will they lose playing in front of an empty stadium?

Last year LSUs athletic department had a revenue of $157,000,000.00 (I rounded down) $42,000,000 came from ticket sales, $63,000,000 from rights and licensing, $42,000,000 in donations/contributions.
$148,000,000 in expenses.
Without a season you don't have the $42M in ticket sales, you don't have nearly as much donations coming in, there isn't the money from TV rights. Then.. There is bowl game money. The money each SEC team earns in a bowl game is put into one big pool and divided up evenly among all 14 schools.
And LSU is only one of a handful of schools that actually makes money during baseball season so not playing most of their games this past year, they are probably already starting to see the money going out of the window.
