Today is the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act––one of the crowning achievements of our democracy. But once the Supreme Court weakened it, some state legislatures unleashed a flood of laws designed specifically to make voting harder, especially in communities of color.

We've got to fight harder to protect the right to vote. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have––and we can start by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Once we pass that, we should continue marching forward to make it even better.

We can do this by making sure every American is automatically registered to vote, including formerly incarcerated people. Let’s also make sure to add more polling places, expand early voting, and make Election Day a national holiday.

quote:

Barack Obama
@BarackObama

Let’s guarantee that every citizen has equal representation in our government. And end partisan gerrymandering, so that all voters have the power to choose their politicians. And if all this takes eliminating the filibuster—a Jim Crow relic––then that’s what we should do.

quote:

Barack Obama
@BarackObama

We have to treat voting as the most important action we can take on behalf of democracy. So make sure you are registered to vote. Request a mail-in ballot early and send it back early. Then get your family and friends to do it, too. Every vote counts.

This recent fascination with destroying the filibuster is bizarre.

I also find it hilarious that he didn't once say vote for Slow Joe

Let's start with the principle one vote for one live person that can make it to the polls or fill out a verified absentee ballot.

Democrats would never go for that principle.

Eisenhower tried in 1958. People like LBJ, Gore, Thurmond filibustered.

It was Democrats who opposed civil and voting rights.

Seriously, try researching the civil rights act of 1958 sometime.

Why? Dems can ram though legislation when they have a simple majority in congress. They want that.

They sure didn’t mind the filibuster when Turtle held the Senate and Obama was president.

Also it’s rare that Dems will ever have a 60 vote majority in the senate the way it’s set up. So it’s impossible to get anything done, even if they have hold the presidency an house.

When did this become a talking point? The filibuster has been around a hell of a lot longer than Jim Crow. Wasn't it first used in the 1830s or '40s?

Maybe it's time for evangelical mega churches to start handholding people to the voting booth and promising free meals as part of it

Me too. One of the few, if only, things on which I agree with Obama.

I also find it fascinating that they consider Gerrymandering a "republican" thing.

How about respect those that did show up and vote in the 2016 election and not try to remove a validly elected POTUS?

Because apparently it isn’t “gerrymandering” to demand black set-aside seats.

People who claim it is difficult to get an ID while driving around and buying alcohol.

How is voting hard? I have lived in majority black cities my entire life and I have never had problems voting.

What makes it so difficult for poc to go vote in these cities I have lived in? I can go down to the little school by my house, vote, and then be on my way to work.

I can’t find anyplace to read the Act. All my searches just come with stories about the act and not what it actually says.

And it rare that the GOP will ever have a 60 vote majority.

The filibuster forces congress to compromise and not bend to the extremes.
