Not sure how the state pulled this off (National Guard?), but in Louisiana it would only evacuate 60 people instead of 80 - they'd have to leave the middle seat open for COVID.

Isn't that shear oriented in a way that will line-up with the natural outflow from the NW to NE part of Laura.
Not that she needs any help with outflow -

That's the fine line they have to walk with these.
I don't think people have done a good job of educating the public on how hurricanes actually impact locations when they make landfall. The public has a perception of hurricanes being these giant monsters that leave a 300 miles wake of destruction in their path. So someone rides it out 50-100 miles from the center and it's not really that bad so they think it was overhyped.
The really destructive part of a hurricane is in a really really narrow band in the core of the storm.

The problem with storms like Laura that max out on the day they make landfall is people don't pay attention and take them as seriously and by they time they do it's too late. Harvey strengthened late and caught people off guard. The same happened with Michael.
When I left yesterday morning, I was expecting it to be a strong 1 or light 2. I was leaving to not have to deal with power outages. Now there’s a good chance it levels us. Crazy how that changed

I follow the weather here and there ( ) and I still couldn't convince my inlaws in Crowley and Rayne to come stay with us. They called an hour ago or so and now they're worried as hell.
My family lives in Scott. I am starting to get concerned.

I actually know a nurse on the ride-out team in that NICU, and he is in extremely capable hands. This storm will have little effect on Houston, and a hospital is one of the safest places to be. He is perfectly safe there.
By all accounts, the nurses and doctors there are absolutely incredible, both in talent and character. Tell him or her to give little Wilder a pat on the head from his uncle Hemp.

Thunder's been rollin and the rain is falling in Opelousas. Based on radar, this is the same band that spawned multiple tornado warnings in the BR area, but nothing here thankfully.

What do the C-130's do in this situation?

Wbrz girl says if you get a warning do NOT go to the window to check it out.
I can’t help it though. It’s the first thing i do.
1) Pics?
2) I heard what sounded like things being thrown around outside immediately after the last tornado warning I got. Did I (A) take shelter in my walk-in closet or (B) look out the window?
It was the maintenance guys taking everything down in the common areas.

Perhaps a silver lining, perhaps not, but only 7 direct deaths were attributable to Michael in Florida 2 years ago. The other 43 were from indirect deaths like CO poisoning, electrocution, accidents, medical complications, etc.
So what you are saying is that every death caused by this storm will be listed as a covid death.

TWC is trash
yeah i also think they're playing fast and loose with the words
Ike was "11 feet" but LC was not 11 feet under water. This is projected to be 2 feet higher than Ike, which is shitty, but that doesn't mean that the city will be 13 feet under.
i could be hope casting, but 3-9 feet for ALL of lake charles is just absurd

1. Fly C130 to Port Arthur
2. Put people from Port Arthur on C130
