I'm not sure how this ended up on my recommended list on YT, but I thought it was interesting; a look at what life was like for teens in the pre-internet days. I just hope the kid who called the people at the Korean restaurant Chinese doesn't get canceled today
video

Background This reminds me of my family's Kodachrome slides collection from even earlier
quote:

Eric Fullerton's first video camera was a black-and-white surveillance camera his dad found in a dumpster behind at a shuttering local K-Mart and then gave to him. It didn't have working power or recording, so they built a power supply from parts they picked up at Radio Shack, attached a Nikon zoom lens and wired the camera to the family VCR.

Fullerton was 8 years old at the time. The year was 1986. The city was Huntsville, Ala., where his father Larry Fullerton worked as an electrical engineer and inventor of devices ranging from coin sorters to collision-prevention.

For decades, Fullerton has kept boxes and boxes of VHS and 8mm tapes chronicling his youth. In the summer of 2016, he began uploading some of these videos to a YouTube channel. “It was a place to show my family old videos and just something to laugh at,” he says. But then, random people started commenting on the videos and subscribing to the channel, titled Eric’s Home Movies. “I was a little weirded out, because I didn’t expect anyone to even come across them,” he says. He decided to embrace it and put together a very-’80s-synth-scored video-trailer explaining the channel.

Mom started at Kmart here in 1970 before it opened and retired 28 years later. Huntsville is my home and reliable throughout the years.
I was born here in 1963, delivered by Dr.Carl Grote Jr.

Dudes were hustling as kids. I'll bet they are pretty well off by now.

Wow - unbelievable - I know Darrell and his family - in fact, I am FB friends w/him - he has (had) four older sisters. I grew up in Huntsville and in the summer of 1970 (before Darrell was born - he was the product of a second marriage), I met his oldest sister and dated her off and on for several years. She died a few years ago. His next oldest sister and my wife have been friends for over 50 years and she and her husband live about 15 miles from us. I talked to her over the weekend. Darrell is still in the video production industry in Atlanta and is fairly successful.

That's kind of weird, actually. I had "A Trip to McDonalds 1989" show up on mine.

That convenience store portion is hilarious. Can definitely remember making multiple trips to the register with shitty candy until my money ran out.

That’s mighty fine resolution for a video camera circa 1989.

I'll check this out for sure..

I came across this documentary the other day on Youtube and enjoyed the hell out of it. This isn't a home video, but there is something about the 90s vhs quality film that is so damn nostalgic, and it makes me feel good.

American Hollow(1999)

quote:

This film tells the tale of a close-knit Appalachian family that has changed little in the last 100 years.
