Add A Brave New World and Lord of the Flies to the list.

I read Lord of the Flies freshman year, and Brave New World in a SciFi lit class I took as a senior. Never read Animal Farm or 1984 as part of a class.

So only LotF was part of the standard curriculum.

Not for any of my kids — I hadn’t read them either. They’re in my amazon basket.

1984 was thought to be originally a jab at conservatism. Oh, how the times have changed. So was Uber liberal band Pink Floyd's, Another Brick In The Wall. Both have aged well but for unintended purposes.

I read 1984 freshman year, and then a few times again afterwards. Graduated in 2000.

I was going to make my daughter read it this year. Right after I told her about it. She found out it was on her summer reading list for school.

Yeah, they went from being used as a warning to being used as instruction manuals.

Graduated high school in the past decade.

I'm around your age and read neither of them. Ironically I have 1984 sitting around in my bedroom but haven't took the time to read it.

Thats because progressivism took over the authoritarian mantle.

The hard left and hard right have way too much in common in this regard. Unfortunately progressivism became mainstream.

In a way, I hope these people get what they want, I'll enjoy watching it devour them.

The other funny thing about animal farm is that the 1950s cartoon version was created under the umbrella of the CIA'S Operation Mockingbird. The CIA purchased the rights to the movie from Orwell's widow. She only agreed to do so if they met her conditions, one of which was to meet Clark Gable.

The CIA'S version, which has a different ending than the book, was made with the intent of distributing it in Eastern Europe in an effort to foment rebellion. After the Soviet crackdown in Hungary that wasn't going to happen but it was fairly successful in educating the American people about the rise of the Soviet union. If I recall, all of this info was declassified on 2001.

Re-reading 1984 right now and it’s scaring me tbh

I wish everyone would do this. People don’t see their freedoms being removed one by one because of the propaganda telling them otherwise.

Animal Farm was about Nazism so they may still allow that. Just make them skip the chapters where it is exactly like socialism and the kids will learn the lesson.
