It'd be nice if cigars really lit just by passing one match across them for a second and then never went out.

With how many takes you might have to do for a scene I can understand why an actor would fake smoke. Nobody wants to smoke multiple full packs during a day of shooting.

FWIW we may end up seeing a lot less smoking in movies, as free speech lib Rob Reiner wants to make smoking an automatic R rating.

Damn man I used to really like you on the movie board, now EVERY POST you make has a political tone

John Wayne had no problems with smoking on film. It has been said he smoked between 5-7 packs of Camel cigarettes a day by many of his co-stars.

I can't even wrap my head around that to be honest.

What drives me crazy is the way a scene is edited to where the actor takes a drag, but you never see him exhale. It makes me uncomfortable. Dude, exhale. You're gonna make yourself sick.
All I do is look for the timely “exhale”...

There was a man who lit every cigarette I saw him smoke with a cigarette he was already smoking. It was at a job I had one summer. He was a metal fabricator who had a lathe, and other tools away from everyone else at one end of a factory. He only needed a lighter for the first smoke of the day and maybe the first one after lunch.

Same goes for eating

Jeff Garlin has a bit about this. He was the donut shop guy in Robocop 3 and he suggested to the director “hey to make it more real, what if I just ate a whole donut for the scene.” And the director was like “hell yes, that’s great”

So about 40 takes later (and 40 donuts later) they call it a day and Garlin is getting taken to the hospital after passing out in the car leaving the studio

These days most actors smoke herbal and non-addictive cigs

Aren't they all fake these days?

SAG apparently doesn't allow any real smoking on set...i.e. the workplace.

I've heard they'll use smoke machines to make a room look like everyone's smoking up a storm.

And most actors don't want to inhale whatever concoction is in that herbal cigarette.

I recently read the autobio of the actress who played the
schoolteacher on Little House On The Prairie. I figgered she was
some conservative Theatah type -- turns out she was a '60s hippie
chick who hung out w/Jim Morrison and others in the Laurel Canyon
scene. (she also plays the mother in Eraserhead)

She wrote something very interesting. When she was a starving young
actress she got a job on some TV show where she had to eat dinner. She
showed up on the set hungry, and when they shot the scene she wolfed
down her food voraciously. What she didn't realize is that they would
shoot various coverage shots: long, medium, two shot, her CU etc...
And every shot had to match her wolfing down the food. By the time
they finished the scene she was about to burst.

(You may have heard the story about Sinatra storming off the Guys &
Dolls
set after Brando kept blowing his lines -- deliberately? -- in
a two shot where Sinatra had to eat cheesecake. I've seen outtakes
from Paper Moon where Tatum O'Neal kept deliberately blowing her
line so Ryan had to keep eating pancakes)

The Little House actress said she was too young and naive to know the trick actors use in such scenes: play with your food -- don't eat unless you absolutely have to.

I remember watching a Gunsmoke that had a scene in a cafe. Matt is having
stew for lunch. We see James Arness stir it, cut some of it with a
knife and fork, even bring some of it up to his mouth -- but we never
actually see him eat anything.

Just something to look for in future eating scenes you see.

I've worked on commercials for McDonalds a few times. The actors had trash cans to spit the food into after each take. Nobody wants to eat 30-40 egg McMuffins.

Also, those shoots kind of suck. The room really starts to smell like arse when you have multiple actors, crew, and a trash can filled with spit up food.

I hate it when actors pour themselves a 6-8 finger deep glass of whiskey and just chug it like its sweat tea.

Fake cigs are a fairly recent phenomenon. Kirk Douglas claimed he had to smoke for a role, and got addicted for ten years.

That’s horrible. He should file suit. That could really shorten his life.

My other peeve is actors playing musical instruments badly.

That is legitimately distracting. Like, if an actor is playing a violin or cello or something and the bow strokes don't come close to the music it's completely obvious. and you don't even have to be very familiar with the instrument to notice.
