I used to be a smoker in my younger days and for some reason, in movies, when you see someone “smoking”, I can’t help but ALWAYS look to see if they’re actually smoking...

When I see some wannabe-tough guy smoking a cigarette, and it’s obvious that they aren’t inhaling, it just bothers the shite out of me...

Anyone else?

These days most actors smoke herbal and non-addictive cigs. Back in the day they usually did the real thing though.

I don’t smoke and never paid that much attention to it but I remember reading that Gene Hackman doesn’t smoke at all and struggled with herbal cigarettes for a role.

I had a problem with flat stage eyeglass lenses before flat lenses became a real option. I still dislike it in period films.

My other peeve is actors playing musical instruments badly.

this is what the chick from the short-lived american woman series with alisha silverstone said.

They were herbal cigarettes and it was a choice to play true to the time. Wasn’t the most fun but honest. Thanks for watching

Do you guys understand what I’m driving at?

When an actor/actress just pulls the smoke, herbal or real, into their mouth and just “puffs it out”...

It reminds me of the kid in HS who really wanted to “look cool”, but couldn’t/didn’t actually inhale...

I mean the scene you’re watching might be take #50

Fake cigs or not, that’s gonna get old quick

Yeah they are not smoking real cigarettes. Prop departments get these herbal cigs that smell weird.

It's easy to tell who's an actual smoker and who's just faking for the camera.

Eastwood hated the cigarello's he had to smoke in his westerns.

Doubt they were herbal...

Not as much when they are holding, carrying, sipping a drink and there it is clearly an empty cup. It pisses me off so much and I have no idea why.

What drives me crazy is the way a scene is edited to where the actor takes a drag, but you never see him exhale. It makes me uncomfortable. Dude, exhale. You're gonna make yourself sick.

Fake cigs are a fairly recent phenomenon. Kirk Douglas claimed he had to smoke for a role, and got addicted for ten years.

He also said he quit by doing what his Russian peasant father had done: he would carry a pack around w/him in his pocket, then when he wanted to smoke he would take out the pack, look at it, and ask "Who stronger? Me? You?", then put the pack back in his pocket.

FWIW we may end up seeing a lot less smoking in movies, as free speech lib Rob Reiner wants to make smoking an automatic R rating.

Trivia tidbit: in the WWII movie Pearl Harbor not one person smokes.

I watched Hidden Figures twice and the one thing that really bugged me was that for all the detail they put into the props, costumes and cars, not a single person in the movie was seen smoking. You have to know with all those physicists and mathematicians almost all of them smoked either cigarettes or a pipe.
