This latest spike absolutely didn't have that effect on deaths or hospitalizations.

An increase in caseload is inevitable, whether we prolong that final number or not is irrelevant. Originally, the experts recommended we "flatten the curve" to not overwhelm our healthcare systems to the point that there are more deaths due to improper treatment.
