New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins said the risk surrounding the coronavirus "has to really be eliminated" before he would be comfortable returning to play this season.

Jenkins described football as a "nonessential business." And he pointed out that "the NBA is a lot different than the NFL because they can actually quarantine all of their players or whoever is going to participate."

"We have over 2,000 players, even more coaches and staff. We can't do that," Jenkins said. "So we'll end up being kind of on this trust system, the honor system, where we just have to hope that guys are social distancing and things like that. And that puts all of us at risk, not only us as players and who's in the building, but when you go home to your families. You know, I have parents that I don't want to get sick.

"And I think until we get to the point where we have protocols in place, and until we get to a place as a country where we feel safe doing it, we have to understand that football is a nonessential business. And so we don't need to do it. And so the risk has to be really eliminated before we -- before I -- would feel comfortable with going back."

Is his salary for 2020 non-essential?

I actually believe him. I rarely see a black person without a mask. I see them driving around in vehicles by themselves with masks on. Just an observation.

I'm very curious how people will react when sports come back. A lot of people have learned to do things without sports and I'm curious how many will continue vs making an entire Saturday/Sunday or evening focused on sports.

If sports struggle to bring fans back then the salaries of these individuals will go down as well, he got paid so he won't care but future players may care.

He's more than welcome to not play, doesn't bother me. Some 22 year old kid who grew up in poverty and has a chance to make at minimum hundreds of thousands of dollars this year probably wants to play, which I have no problem with either.

My only concern here is how do the Saints move forward with salary ramifications.

If everything is a go, and he refuses to play, how does the CBA handle that, do we get to void the contract and get that cap space back?

I’m sure there’s a free agent out there that would love to take his spot. May not be as talented, but would focus on doing his job and not other nonsense.

He’s probably more concerned about being exposed on the field as a washed up 33yo safety well past his prime than being exposed to a virus.

It takes a considerable amount of privilege to be able to put your job on hold.

Didn't like him the first time around he played for the Saints, didn't like resigning him, and his 2nd go around isn't starting very well either

If that attitude spreads he’ll end up seeing how non essential his profession will become

I'm sure there's some guy who would be glad to fill his spot. odds are that guy won't like running his mouth nearly as much.
