Work computer was stolen from my car

Went out for drinks last night after leaving the office, and stupidly kept my computer with me instead of dropping it off at my apartment.
Come back to my car at around 10 - window is smashed, computer is gone.
Should I start updating my resume now? How often does this happen in the corporate world?

My laptop was stolen out of a rental car in LA a year ago.
I'm still employed.

Lol you actually work. Us OT mods have our butlers do the excel spreadsheets remotely.

Subtle
‘I still have a job’
and
‘have a car’
and
‘Bars are open here’
brag

Well, one thing is for certain, if/when you get it back, none of your work will have been completed for you.

It was in your trunk. They smashed the windows and popped the trunk from the inside and stole everything.
It was well out of visibility. You were being prudent.
Report it with work immediately. Stick to your story. You'll be fine.

Were you going to drive that car after a few drinks? Sinner

The first thing you need to worry about is if you have renters insurance. Your company is going to want the money for the computer. Other than that, you should be fine. Maybe a warning.

Wonder how they knew your computer was in the trunk?

Make sure you report it stolen immediately to your employer. Many companies have a policy about them being notified with a certain time frame of it not being in your possession.
Other than that, you should be good. shite happens, you know?

Did you go out with friends from work? I'd avoid telling your employer you went straight from work to the bar for 5-6 hours. Tell them you forgot to take it inside your apartment and you noticed your laptop when you went out to the bar later that night. You hid it under a seat or in the trunk, but car was broken into. You'll be good.

Do you seriously think you'll get fired over a $900 laptop? Worst case they'd make you pay it back right?
Nothing would happen to me and they'd order me a new one on Monday.

one of the first rules my company tells us when we receive laptops is that you are liable if you leave your company laptop in a vehicle and it is stolen. you should’ve dropped it off first, but I get it. That sucks man

That happens in my company on occasion...hopefully your company had the foresight to install some security so the computer can’t be used by anyone that is unauthorized. You should report the computer stolen immediately in case someone tries to access your company’s network ar anything like that.
Other than that, it boils down to the cost of a used laptop, which is not much...
