We need to have a discussion about the militarization of police

This is in Jacksonville, Florida
It warps how they see their place in society, their relationship with people. I've heard law enforcement commonly refer to non-LEO as "civilians," condescendingly, when in fact they, too, are civilians, and their job is to protect and serve their fellow civilians. Anything else smacks of a weird appropriation of quasi-military status.
Like I have said for years. I support law enforcement, but we as a society should demand a higher bar for entry into the profession. Too many roided out billy badasses making it in there.

If anything, these riots actually justify the militarization of the police...
Two different discussions here...

People rioting, looting, and burning down innocent businesses have no right to complain about police militarization. They are actually making the case FOR it — not against it. They’ve demonstrated they are unable to self-govern.

I agree with you. Cops shouldn’t have what are basically tanks. I don’t mind them having handguns, but if you need more than that it a shotgun, call in the national guard.
On the flip side, there are neighborhoods in America that are damn near war zones. IMO, cops should just not go in there except to pick up the bodies. Until certain demographics clean up their act, let them live in the community they have built.

I mean, you're right, but it becomes more and more justifiable as people lose their minds and engage in mass violence. None of this will help.

Of all the police incidents we’ve had in the past few years, I can’t think of one that meets your shitty stereotype

Apparently, we need a stronger and more powerful police presence.

It doesn't bother me that they have all of these toys. It does piss me off royally that they aren't using them right now when we need them the most.
They only use these for raiding pot houses and in parades

So, if I'm a cop, and I sit back with just my pistol to protect the public from brick throwing hordes, how long will I (and you I'm supposedly protecting) last?

Those are in response to riots. Not everyday neighborhood patrols

Normally I’d agree, but what we are seeing from this terrorist organization (ANTIFA) kind of justifies it. It’s time they start using some of the firepower.
Agree. Raise the bar, and the pay, and equally as important - limit the OT/off duty shite. Or make a separate force for the church traffic directors, etc. I do think part of why these cops make horrible decisions is they are trying to take on too many hours.

If you were a cop, would you rather go to work in that armored vehicle or this?

See, the thing is, these things always start out with people making points like this, and always circle back around to people acknowledging the need for police (even a heavy police presence like that picture in certain situations). A lot of people in Birmingham would have liked to see one of those rolling in about midnight last night.

So I assume you aren’t complaining about the improved safety equipment.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again:
"We've militarized our police forces. We've given them military weapons, military training, armor, vehicles, and communications gear. We've put them on the front lines of the "war on terror" and the "war on drugs". Given all of this and their adversarial interactions with the general public, it's AMAZING that there aren't more police shootings."
What pisses me off about this whole ordeal is that the BLM people have co-opted a legitimate civil rights issue as their own. It's not. This affects all of us.

Well get ready to pay way more for this higher bar. Like, at very least double what you are now.
But it would allow you to hire very competent people.

Maybe, but the problem is that you can't pay people enough to do that job for just the amount of pay you get. You can't pay people $100,000 a year to be a beat cop.
So what else is their motivation?
They literally put their lives on the line every day that they go to work.
Who else is motivated to do that for what they get paid except Billy Badass?
Not to mention—and I guess I'm going to keep referring to this until people get sick of hearing it—but the Stanford Prison Experiment suggests that it's not merely a problem of having bad apples. The barrel tends to make the apples go bad.
