Dr. Anthony Fauci now says that a second wave of COVID-19 may not even happen and that wearing a mask is largely symbolic at this point.
quote:
In a Wednesday interview with CNN's "Newsroom," Fauci — member of the White House's coronavirus task force — said that a second COVID-19 wave is not necessarily inevitable.
"We often talk about the the possibility of a second wave, or of an outbreak when you're reopening," Fauci explained. "We don't have to accept that as an inevitability."
quote:
During the interview, the infections diseases expert also admitted that wearing a mask is not 100% effective, but says that it is a gesture that shows "respect" for other people.

Other than a few areas run by incompetent govs, a first wave never occurred

Wonder how JBE can spin this one?

Reopening the economy in the face of an overreaction shows respect for people and their livlihoods, too. Let's focus on that.

Need to change you title OP.
He didn’t say mask wearing is symbolic.
It’s not 100% effective. We knew that.
It helps protect others from you. Hence respect. We knew that.

He's just covering all the bases at this point so in the fall no one can claim he was wrong.

Give him 2 months and the 2nd wave will be imminent and wearing any type of facial covering will 100% protect you from catching the covid.

Hiding under your bed would be more effective, why not that ? The mask thing needs to end now, if you're sick stay home. If you're scared to go out then no one is forcing you, again stay home but don't force others to be ridiculous on your behalf.

Some people just can't help themselves.
Cenitnel will run with the made up quote, no doubt.

Such a hack job of an article and a post by you. From your link, he previously said the virus will return in the fall. Now he's saying we don't have to accept a 2nd outbreak/wave as inevitable because:
There is a difference between the virus still being around and a full blown second wave or outbreak. He's saying we don't have to accept a second spike in cases/deaths if we do the things we need to do to minimize risks.
And you conveniently left out the rest of his point about masks:
quote:
Fauci admitted that he is beginning to feel more and more optimistic as days go by, and insists that the U.S.'s expanded capability for testing is bolstering the COVID-19 response.
He pointed out that a second wave is entirely preventable if the U.S. is able to have the "workforce, the system, and the will to do the kinds of things that are the clear and effective identification, isolation, and contact tracing."
There is a difference between the virus still being around and a full blown second wave or outbreak. He's saying we don't have to accept a second spike in cases/deaths if we do the things we need to do to minimize risks.
And you conveniently left out the rest of his point about masks:
quote:
Fauci also said that Americans should wear face masks in public to protect themselves — but also to get into good practices.
"I want to protect myself and protect others [by mask-wearing], and also because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that's the kind of thing you should be doing," he added.
During the interview, the infections diseases expert also admitted that wearing a mask is not 100% effective, but says that it is a gesture that shows "respect" for other people.
