I'm interested in purchasing a shot gun. It will primarily be used as home self defense weapon.
With the riots, looting and burning going on near me in Minneapolis, I feel the need to protect my family, and I don't currently own any firearm.
I know they have many options: Pump, Lever action, semi automatic etc..
what do you think is a good option?

Thanks in advance.

Do you really want to start with a shotgun if you don't even have a weapon in your house? That seems like a lot of gun for a novice

I've used it for hunting back in the days. I thought shot gun is an ideal weapon for home defense.

Get like an 870 pump. Easy, reliable, and pretty cheap.

Most true self defense encounters happen in very close range and even though Hollywood portrays the shotgun as a short range wide spread weapon that is really not the case. You still have to aim one to hit anything.

If you plan to be outside your home in defense of it engaging people at 30+ feet then a pump action shotgun is appropriate.

If you plan on being inside your home when the encounter takes place I would recommend a small revolver for its simplicity and reliability. If you get training and practice with a semi-auto handgun you can have extra capacity in the same form factor.

Looks smaller than the 870 recommended by the previous poster.
Thanks

Mossberg 500 with #4 birdshot or #1 buckshot. 00 buck tends to go thru people and walls (depending on wall construction), called over penetration. Dont want to kill a family member in the next room or neighbor if you live in an apt complex. Also shooting a fire arm especially a shotgun indoors with no hearing protection is an incredibly disturbing and disorienting experience.

Don’t go cheap on the gun or shells. Remington pump is inexpensive and will do the job.

Definitely get some good hearing protection.

Don’t overthink it and you’ll make a good choice, baw.
