I was on my patio in Lafayette yesterday afternoon. Heard some noise and spotted a pileated woodpecker on a tree only 20 feet away.

I was able to get a few pics on my Iphone, but not much detail. It stayed a short while and flew to two more trees in the yard.

The only other time I saw one was in Boyce near Alexandria twenty five years ago.

How often do you guys see them? Any stories?

I see them 3-4 times a year around my house in Abita. First time I saw one I was surprised at how big they are.

Quite common here in the woods of North FL. I see or hear them just about every day. Compared to other woodpecker species these guys bring the heavy machinery.... I'm always in awe when watching chips fly from them working a tree/excavating a nest.
