Yeah, 24 hours ago they were saying to soon to tell, and a gigantic range of landfall somewhere between Texas and the FL Panhadle. But it looks like today the models have found a breakthrough and getting more on the same page.

Is the tip of the cone just for looks? According to the cone, after Sunday it actually narrows. How can they be more certain about further out? Would a flat tip make people uncomfortable so they curve it for aesthetics?

The latest GFS run (12z) takes it right up through Terrebonne Bay, but the steering pattern on the system has most of the convection/precipitation removed from the center and to the NE, so Mississippi/Alabama take the brunt of the rainfall in that run. Very similar to Barry which had the highest initial totals to the NE of landfall and then the highest overall totals well inland as Barry degenerated.

This is not a smart-arse response. I just wanted to point out that the ICON can sometimes be a decent model to follow. This afternoon's Euro run is almost identical to the ICON from this morning in both landfall location and strength. I'll be keeping an eye on the Euro, GFS, and ICON models.

Your 18z icon model has a cat 2 hundreds of miles SE of where the NHC has this thing Sun afternoon.

So who do you want to trust, the NHC or the Icon model?

More worried about wind pushing water and inland flooding.

Any estimates or maps on high tides or flooding yet?

Considering when I posted what I posted the 18z wasn't out yet, your comment is irrelevant. When I posted that, the EURO and ICON were in fact damn near identical. Of course you should always trust the NHC over ANY model - EURO or not - and the NHC just updated their forecast, which yes, is considerably different in time frame than the 18z ICON.
