I just can't stand her screeching. I feel like she takes away from more Grateful Dead songs, than she adds. It is a shame because this time of the band was one of the best, but a lot of times her singing is unbearable.

She ruined all ‘72-‘79 for me...the last 20 years I pretty much just go to my favorite eras...’69-‘71 and ‘89-‘91.

Whenever I am driving and a killer Playin’ is peaking, and I think, “Damn these guys are on fire”, as the jam comes to its crescendo, “it” rears it’s ugly head and has me scrambling to quickly change the station off the GD Channel...

Jerry was too nice and avoided confrontation at all costs, so he didn’t deal with giving her the boot.

I enjoy some her stuff and yes other stuff is quite annoying, but im not gonna not listen to the best years of the band because of her.

Its also pretty funny that someone with a phish screen name Is complaining about singing, i mean, even in the years i loved phish, their singing was always like nails on a chalkboard.

Let's face it, while the Dead are now on my Mt Rushmore but it wasn't because Lucio Pavarotti was in the band. None of them had great voices but they had the some of the best lyrics, melodies, songs instrumentals etc ever. John Mayer may be the best singer in the band history!

I am the same way with her. Something about her pitch. It must be similar to why my wife can't stand Radiohead because of Tom's voice.

Keep on changing your demand, bub. You'll be right eventually.

It's widely known that Jerr avoided confrontation. You're not going to find a quote from Jerry Garcia expressing his distaste for Donna's singing voice. That would've caused a confrontation.

so from that, ignoring that he also invited her to sing in his solo band, you’re comfortable that Garcia disliked donnas singing and only kept her around because he was too passive to do otherwise

got it

Yet once her and her husband got butthurt & left, she didn't play with any member until after Jerry died. You'd think if he liked her singing so much she wouldn't have taken a 15+ year hiatus from every member of the band...

she found religion, remarried and retired
and what were these bands she could have been singing with before Garcia died? Bobby and the midnites?

LOL

Pigpen was pretty decent. Also a reminder that Donna was one of the back up singers on Elvis's Suspicious Minds. The only songs she ever really bothered me on were Playing in the Band and pre Fire on the Mountain versions of Scarlet Begonias. She was also a big reason why the best versions of The Music Never Stopped and Comes a Time were when she was in the band. I always had a bigger problem with Brent's Casio sounding dinky keyboards than with Donna.

Unlike the others in the frontline, Donna had only one job. Near the end, it was becoming pretty clear she couldn't handle the grind. Many songs, she complemented nicely IMO. Other songs, like Playin, Ramble On Rose, or sometimes even Deal, umm, not so much, lol... that said, when she was at her best, there's no denying she had a hall of fame voice.

I remember reading an interview with her from the 80's, and she still seemed a bit in denial about getting pink slipped. Hopefully she's listened to some of the tapes since then
