Solid list overall, but O has an undefeated season and coaches in the West while Smart hasn't been able to get over the hump while in the East.. SEC Coaching Rankings

Smart recruits well and coaches in the East.

That's all he has.

I wish Mason wasn’t stuck at a place like vandy. I think he would be a star anywhere else.

Drinkwitz will shoot up the list quickly imo. He is a really good coach.

O being behind Kirby is a joke. O has accomplished more in the same time frame with a harder schedule every year.

Yet in 2 head to head meetings O has coached LSU to a 73-26 or 36.5 to 13 or +23.5 point differential.

One has a NC ring, COTY award and a perfect season.

But other than that, Kirby is better.

I’ll always take the leader who is confident enough to constantly evaluate and address both personal and team weaknesses.

Never mind the fact that Smart has lost all of his biggest games since he has been at Georgia and the fact that he has been Orgeron's bitch.

Now, UGA has recruited better since Smart has been at UGA. However, that's because since Smart has been the head coach, UGA spends two, three, and even more times the amount of money most other schools spend on recruitment. As opposed to Smart doing a better job overall than everyone else. Not to mention that Smart has done a piss poor job of developing that talent.

If you are looking at overall success, I agree with the list. If you are looking at the last 2-3 years , O is first. Only stat you need to look at is record against top 25 the last 2 seasons.

In terms of the "big picture" role that comes with being a college coach I think coach O has more than proven himself beyond reproach.

But in terms of who I would trust to draw up a better scheme and make halftime adjustments on an Xs and Os standpoint, I might lean on Kirby. His tenure as Alabama's DC solidified that.

So I can see the argument that Kirby is a better "coach", but if I were an AD at a major institution I would hands down give the keys to the kingdom to Orgeron.

Kirby at UGA: 44-12 (78.5%)
Bowls: 3-2
CFP: 1-1

Coach O at LSU: 40-9 (81.6%)
Bowls: 4-1
CFP: 2-0

We have seen them head to head twice so the facts are better than opinion.

Smart is a slight upgrade over Mark Richt. He can't get them to the mountain top from the SEC East yet O has a perfect season in the toughest division in the world.

If he continues recruiting elite and can snag a Joe Brady type coach, he should/can win a national title.

The first phase of the body of the article,

quote:

Should everything go as expected,

to me, helps explain what caused them to screw up the list. The authors use the antithesis of College Football to frame their statements.

The implied error seems to be: they overrate coaches whose beneficial characteristics are easy to understand, and underrate those who abilities are not.

The data is not ambiguous, but cause behind it is. That's why they ranked Kirby ahead of CEO.

You are using examples necessary to be a good coordinator, not a Head Coach.

Record on the field as well as tenure at similar institutions should be the criteria for HC.

Last meeting, the Announcers, pre game, were comparing talent. They had Georgia well ahead.

In addressing how he was going to handle Clyde, Smart's last comment, stand back and watch.

I'd say he's over the hump in the East. UGA has won the East 3 years in a row and tied for 2nd four years ago, Kirby's first year as HC. That being said, he hasn't done a ton once he's gotten to Atlanta and outside of 2017.
