On Josh Williams' touchdown to make it 14-9, I noticed LSU lined up with 4 tight ends: Mason Taylor, Kole Taylor, Jack Mashburn, and Nick Storz. I know the Brian Kelly offenses are TE-centric but that's still quite a sight to see! Has LSU lined up with 4 TEs before? is it not that uncommon and I just never noticed?
*slightly* being the operative term. True that it would not have gone for a touchdown but it saved a solid 15-25 yard chunk of a return if the runner avoids him in the open field.

forcing MSU to instead have to earn that in at least 2 first downs is huge in the battle for field position.

BUT Why does it apply only to the fourth quarter?!

Because the logic mainly applies when you KNOW you have to score 2 touchdowns and hold them to 0, so basically a 4th quarter scenario where you are down by 2 tds .

Any other scenario is too “open ended”. If you exclusively go for 2 pts in the first half, there’s no way of predicting how the other team will react in the second half. This scenario that we are discussing is for when you are in desperation mode, not as an all-the-time-strategy

you want to risk going down an extra score just to avoid a tie that keeps you alive and still in the game

you're not risking going down by an extra score, you're risking going down by 8 points instead of 7. Just as many scores away from tying.

Don't feel bad though, I frequently have to clarify the rules of football to my wife who, like you, has struggles keeping up with all the nuances.

In a week of shite takes, we waited till Friday to crown the champ.

in a week's worth of takes on Tiger Rant, you think an analytically-backed criticism of Brian Kelly's decision in a pivotal moment of the game is the worst one?

I've heard of babies being dropped on their head, but you clearly were thrown against a wall.
True, the safer bet is kicking the extra points. A statistic I would be curious to see is how well teams do in overtime after tying the game from being down by multiple touchdowns.

If the team that was losing has to expend more energy to catch up or use their better plays to score the must-have points, then maybe the tend to do worse in overtime. If the numbers back that up, then I think that impacts the decision of "safe bet to tie vs not-terrible bet to win"
A lot of conversation has been dedicated to the last play of the game, but the decision not to go for the 2-pt conversion was much more aggravating to me when LSU scored the second to last touchdown. If you're down by 14 in the 4th quarter and score a touchdown, THAT is when it's logical to go for 2. If you make it, then you just need a PAT to win the game. If you miss it, you still have a chance to go for 2 again and send it to OT.

Brian Kelly brought up analytics when addressing his decision to kick the PAT, so this analytical oversight is even more bothersome.
The Drury Inn is pretty nice, good amenities, outside of campus and downtown but not far away and right off the highway (opposite side of town from the airport though).

Prices are nuts for that weekend though (I live is south Georgia and am considering going to the game). If you're going alone, it might be best to just get a single bedroom Airbnb that's within walking distance from downtown because ubers will be a pain in the bullocks that Saturday night.
Perhaps not "the greatest", but a noteworthy one was the reverse against Alabama in 2010 on a 4th and short at around mid-field. It was a quintessential Les Miles call that we used to love to cheer for before his fall from grace.
What was the name of the Alabama QB that beat clemson? Coker? had a cannon of an arm and am entirely too lazy to google it

Georgia lol How many teams have a first time starting QB in the program and win a title?

am I being "wooshed" here? something like 7 or 8 out of the last 10 national champions were with first year starters
I think that stat also deserves an asterisk regarding the La'el Collins situation. the number would definitely be 8 and he had a shot at being a 1rst rounder if memory serves

There is plenty to be excited about beforehand but the prospect of Taylor and Arik as polished juniors on a 2-headed TE monster attack complimenting a stable of 4 and 5 star receivers is confidence inspiring for LSU's prolonged success.
Lots of over-the-top negative reviews on here. Gainesville is more than capable of providing a good game-day experience for you and your friends. I've been living here for years and never hesitate to don my purple and gold around town. Are there obnoxious fans? of course, everybody has multiple anecdotes of unfriendly fans at an away game.

If you are driving in on Friday and out on Sunday then traffic is a complete non-issue. It's open container campus-wide so if the football stadium is in view then no cops will harass you for walking around with a solo cup (I don't know why anyone posted that drinking at an SEC football game is an issue). It's a nice enough campus to walk around and explore during the tailgating portion, there are plenty of eateries within 2 blocks of the stadium, and there is plenty of activity around the stadium that's fun to check out.
Agreed, Mullen has had Aranda's number for years and schemed his way to a 28-21 second half lead against a team considered "all time great". If the LSU offense doesn't do its magic then Mullen would have been at liberty to keep his game plan in the 4th and burn more clock while taking less risk in LSU territory.

That being said, his having nothing to say post-game other than complain about inconsequential injuries once again showed just wast a pissant he really is.
In terms of the "big picture" role that comes with being a college coach I think coach O has more than proven himself beyond reproach.

But in terms of who I would trust to draw up a better scheme and make halftime adjustments on an Xs and Os standpoint, I might lean on Kirby. His tenure as Alabama's DC solidified that.

So I can see the argument that Kirby is a better "coach", but if I were an AD at a major institution I would hands down give the keys to the kingdom to Orgeron.
That was such a statement piece to end the 8-year slump by running it right up their gut

I don't think "it was a given" that they were going to be good. In November of last season Coach O called out the line play as being what was holding us back for the entire world to hear. Not too many on the message boards were touting returning the starting o-line that shat the bed against Alabama.
That was pretty much expected when Bo was brought in and immediately announced a switch to 4-3.

I'm not going to pretend that I know what the landscape of interior D-linemen looks like across the country but it's hard to imagine there will be a more stout anchor for a goal-line stand than the combination of Shelvin and Ika.

Well...an offense bereft of options to pass to might actually be something a top talent WR likes to see
