I looked at the Hasty Bakes before and if I were going all out then I would definitely be looking to buy one. Nice unit

My birthday is coming up and I want a charcoal grill. What should I get for my first grill? Also, any charcoal grilling tips for a newb are appreciated.

For the $200 budget charcoal grill, I'll echo the Weber Kettle. It's one of the proven classics that isn't fancy but it just works. If you watch a lot of the BBQ channels on YouTube, you'll see guys who have multiple thousand plus dollar cookers who still go back and run their kettles.

Plus theres a ton of accessories you can pick up for it to really tinker with your cooking projects.

Vortex

Do you prefer the vortex to the slow n sear? I have the SnS, and love it - it never leaves the grill. What are the advantages of the Vortex?

Weber 22 is the way to go for your budget. You can add a slow n sear later if you want.

Like others have said though, the PK will be the last grill you ever buy. Big jump in build quality over the Weber.

I don't have the vortex, but I cant think of any advantages over the sns other than price.

I have never paid for a Weber Kettle, they are on the side of the road for free all the time. Just buy some replacement parts and you are good.

Okay. I found out about the SnS while researching the Vortex. The advantages of the SnS are that it never leaves the grill and it makes both "low and slow" and searing easier. The Vortex generates a ton of heat, but is kind of a special application tool.

That's what I concluded, and I know you do a lot of cooking, so I thought maybe there was something else that I missed. Anyway, love the SnS and highly recommend it, although I know some videos are out there saying that it doesn't give you anything that MacGyver can't do with a couple of tin cans and some duct tape.

With a budget of $200, you can get a pretty sweet cooler/grill combo at any local hardware store. You just have to by the grate separate.

I have both. SNS only leaves my grill if I’m doing chicken wings then I use my vortex. I like having both, but the vortex is a one trick pony to me, but it does that one thing extremely well.

I started with the classic Weber. Learned different methods and how to slow cook/smoke meat on it. Then I moved to an electric smoker and haven’t looked back. But getting the basics down first is a good start, have fun!

I haven't really done much smoking on a kettle, but can't you achieve the same thing just banking the coals along the side and maybe a couple cheap fire bricks if needed?

WEBER KETTLE Charcoal Grill 22 1/2" size. Plenty of accessories, you tube and google are your friend for long cooks and smoking foods, Snake Method, Searing, etc.

I'll echo the Weber Kettle. I've had about 4 different ones over the last 26 years, it's probably all I'll ever own. You can do damn near anything on it and it is so easy to learn temps with how much charcoal you start with in the chimney.

Another vote for Weber kettle. Learn how to manage your fire on a kettle and those skills translate to nearly every other cooker.

I'd check Craigslist. You can often find them for $20 and with a little effort, clean them up like new.

Pick up a chimney starter too.

You can save yourself a little money for meat. Grilling is a skill. The more you practice, the better you'll be.

You can and it is what I did for a long time. But I love my SNS. It makes it super easy and it protects the side of your grill over time.
