2003 National Championship was terrible

I watched the game yesterday on Youtube. Such sloppy play.
Turnovers galore. There should have been at least 7 more interceptions between Jason White and Matt Mauck.
White won the Heisman that year? Mauck threw for 3 interceptions and may have outplayed White.
Tons of penalties. I just forgot how ugly of a game this was through the years.
Team Stats
Stat OKLA LSU
First Downs 12 13
Rush-Yds-TDs 33-52-2 40-159-2
Cmp-Att-Yd-TD-INT 13-37-102-0-2 14-24-153-0-2
Total Yards 154 312
Fumbles-Lost 2-0 1-1
Turnovers 2 3
Penalties-Yards 11-70 8-65

yea, really glad we won but it's a pretty boring game to watch in retrospect

It’s crazy how hard to watch late 90’s early 2000’s football is outside of Florida and some Big 12 schools.
It’s just wild in hindsight how many teams thought the best offensive strategy was three yards up the middle, two yards up the middle, I-formation two receivers out slow developing pass play on third and 5.

To an extent I agree, but remember, HS prospects weren't doing 7-on-7 all summer and coming from HS spread offenses. The throw/catch skills weren't near what we see now.

that was the two best defenses in the country

I remember being at the game and feeling like the 1st quarter took forever. Given that the game was fairly close from start to finish and there were a lot of LSU fans in attendance that had never seen a national championship team, it was a high level of both energy and 'nervousness' all the way until our last punt to win the game.

The best team in the country didn’t play in the game

Top two defenses in the country. Both units made offenses look like that all year.

That was the exact type of game LSU wanted to play. LSU needed the game to be ugly. They were never going to be able to keep up with Oklahoma if it turned into a track meet.
That’s why I think a LSU/USC game that year would have been epic.

I was on the edge of my seat hanging on every play at the time but yeah it wasn’t a game I’ve gone back to rewatch much.

After the first offensive series for each team, I had no doubt for the rest of the game that LSU would win.
And for somebody who grew up with a single legendary LSU national championship, and went through the early 1990s, that was HUGE.

That was back when defenses won championships.

It was pretty exciting watching it from the "front" row of the student section down in the endzone.

It was not a boring game in any way.

If LSU goes up 24-7 and doesn't do that dumb shite on the FG make, then it's an easy win. Then the Mauck INT to either late 3rd or early 4th kept it a game. LSU had to survive itself that night. And LSU gifted OU's first TD on the blocked punt.

But it gave the Marcus Spears pick 6. Sorry about the quality, apparently was shot via potato cam.
