About That Odessa, TX, Bar...

Original Story.
TL;DR - Odessa, TX bar owner opens up shop, defying Governor's order, police show up and shut it down.
This thread isn't about that. This thread is about the "Six armed protestors," also present at the bar.
As is stated in the linked article -
These guys are part of the "Open Texas" group whose stated goal is to "support businesses reopening across the state." Commendable, right?
Not according to the Sheriff -
Obviously the second amendment protects their right to own the guns and carry them, but do they have a right to gather where they see fit in order to intimidate?
Before you guys start spamming "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" at me - remember the first bit about "A well regulated militia," I'd argue a FB group isn't well regulated at all.

The protesters had previously been at Anytime Fitness supporting the owner of the gym. Anytime Fitness reopened on Friday against the governor's orders.

Defying the Governor’s orders is one thing, but when you bring a bunch of armed vigilantes in from other parts of the state for a show of force, I just got a problem with that.

Well, you know what they say about opinions.
And..."Shall not be infringed!"

How do you know their intent?
Do they always open carry?
Does your shadow intimidate you? How about if I do one on the wall with my hands looking like a dog? Will you see a shepherd, pit bull? I promise to stand 6 feet away from you.

Who are they intimidating?
The cops?

In the other thread it seemed to be the consensus that the "armed protestors" were actually planted by the Sheriff so he could roll in his army tank - which was of course overkill - for a photo op and show of force over the people.

That's exactly what the Sheriff thought.
quote:
Sheriff Mike Griffis told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday that the individuals carrying weapons at the protest were there to intimidate anyone who’d try to stop Big Daddy Zane’s from opening.
“This was not a protest over their second amendment rights,” he said, “it was a show of force so [Ellison, the owner of the bar] could violate the Governor’s order.”

So you made a thread talking about the bar instead of responding within that thread like a normal person?

So by your reading of the bill of rights, only some white supremacy and doomsday militias should be allowed to own guns?

Sounds like the Sheriff just didn't want his authority questioned.
Also, the militia statement you made about the 2A is stupid. The right of the individual to bear arms is necessary for the function of a well-regulated militia according to the founders, but ownership and possession wasn't intended to be limited to use within the confines of militia service.

I don't know about you but I don't even see them as a militia. So what is the point?

Nothing like using intimidation to achieve your desired goal.

First off, yes they have right to gather wherever they want so long as the property owner has no issue with it.
Second, who are they intimidating? They can bear arms, it doesn't matter where or when. Is this that hard to understand? Is this not the same as a protest where folks showed up legally armed? WTF is wrong with you?

Bingo.
I'm sure he claims to be conservative, but he's drunk on power.

Just a bunch of people with guns. Which is OK by me. I don't see any reason to make them into a militia. If you think about it for a second, one reason the left thinks they will separate you from your guns is you aren't part of a militia. Doesn't matter though you, the individual have a right to your guns. I don't want to have to explain this any more than I have here. They are not a militia. They are legal gun owners and likely CC permit holders. They are citizens. That's it!
Edit: If there are felony criminal convicts in the group they may have lost the right to carry guns. I don't know if they are. I'm more concerned about the hair dresser in DFW who got thrown in the can for cutting hair.
