The media has been frequently using the description novel caronavirus. What exactly does that mean? Is this an attempt to worship at the altar of political correctness?

No, it means "new".
There are many coronaviruses out there. This one is new or novel.

It's like the opposite of them using X-mas to remove Christ.
They put novel at the beginning of the name to have a holy God-like reverence to coronavirus.

Novel means new. There are many Coronaviruses, this is a new Coronavirus

It means that the original coronavirus read Harry Potter and said to it self, "I can do this shite" and wrote a novel. Reads like a mix between Tom Clancy and Samuel Beckett.

It’s common lingo in virology and microbiology in general.

If “novel” has any connotation outside of its definition, it would be that the virus was Invented or engineered (originated from a bio lab, for example).

And yet also ancient, in the L-strain form.
What's old is new.

I've already heard the talking head du jour pronouncing it as "Novelle". Grrrrr. Like NASA as "Nassau". Fingernails on a chalkboard.

So what is the next one going to be? the really novel corona virus?
new and improved?
What moron calls something "the new one" when there will be more of them?
(You aren't the moron, you were explaining.)
This is going to be like Joe's Pizza parlors in NYC

I’m not ashamed to admit I didn’t know what novel meant either when I read about the China virus about a month ago. But, no way in hell was I starting a thread on the PT asking what it meant. Damn OP Google is your friend.

It is novel or new to humans. This few humans have immunity to it.
This means that every person it comes in contact with is a potential infection thus it is a Target rich environment and can spread very quickly through the population.
If we were bats, some of us likely would've had immunity to this virus.
Obviously we are not bats. But thanks to certain people wanting to eat bats, we have a pandemic.
How do people eat bat? Are they breaded and fried? Are they grilled? What were they thinking. Does bat have some kind of healing power in Oriental medicine? Wtf?
