WWL TV

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell painted a dire picture of the city's financial situation during an interview on WBOK Radio Monday, saying the lack of income from taxes could cut $100 million from the city's operating budget.

"We are anticipating a budget deficit upwards of $100 million for 2020," she said.

If the city really does stand to lose $100 million this year, coronavirus will have gouged out about 14% out of the city's budget, forcing cuts to programs across the board to keep the lights on at city hall.

This, from an Iowa politician last year, seems prescient

quote:

“Here’s what FEMA tells me: ‘We go to a place like New Orleans and everybody’s looking around saying, who’s gonna help me, who’s gonna help me?’” he tells the crowd. “They’re just always gratified when they come and see how Iowans take care of each other. It’s a point of pride that spreads across the country.”

Fortunately for the citizens of New Orleans, Cantrell’s training, education, and background have uniquely prepared her to face this crisis.

We are lucky to have such a brilliant proven leader in the NOLA mayor’s office.

This will go well.

If anyone knows how to balance a budget it’s Cantrell. Look how she responsibly handled the IRS with her own budget.

N.O. in general will be a bloodbath.
Real estate (both commercial and residential) tax base, unemployment, etc.
A heavily leveraged, service driven economy.
What could go wrong?

No sympathy. I'd just say people of New Orleans, figure it out or move somewhere where things are better.

I am afraid New Orleans may be screwed worse than Katrina- after Katrina, you had tons of work rebuilding...it was a different economy, but thriving. Equipment rental yards were empty...and who can forget the Chinese drywall debacle?

I had to go to the city yesterday to bring my motorcycle in for service- it’s scary how dead it is. Service man said their sales are non-existent. Mind you- this is a high end European bike shop that has inventory that you may only find one of a specific model in 3 or 4 states- if you want a grey Ducati Diavel- they may be the only people that have it from AL to LA....reason I say this is that it’s not a Honda place where you can just go one town over if you don’t like it- you have to go here if you want one of these bikes- and the weather is PERFECT for riding right now.

I’m worried that the very NOLA things like the restaurants we love and specialty shops like the one mentioned just aren’t gonna be able to make it very long. When we do get back to normal- where will the people have gone? It’s not like someone is going to snap their finger and Voila! Everyone back to work now...everyone come eat at my restaurant.

You elected her New Orleans. Enjoy.

Louisiana as a whole will not be in much better shape due to JB Edwards. Dumb and dumber.

Just think if Trump would have told her to cancel Mardi Gras.
Then she’d have someone to blame.
