Why is unemployment increasing to $800 week during this?

Normally it is only around $200 week. I understand the feds are kicking in $600/week.
Why all of a sudden do they recognize that people can't live on $200/wk? During the oil bust in 2016 the laid off workers only got $200/wk. What's the difference now?

The government didn't shut down the oil industry

$200 should be motivation to go get a new job.
You can have the motivation you want right now. Doesn't matter.

$465, in Texas. You could sit home, and pull in $1065 per week, right now.

It is.
Unfortunately my whole industry is crippled at the moment

Which is why benefits are $600
When it goes back to $200 there will be no lack of people saying their industry hasn't recovered.

And there it is...... Texas.................Louisiana. we are dead last in unemployment payouts and have been for years..... Don't worry though after the $600 stimulous goes away it will go back to the max of $247 a week.

Unemployment used to be based on your income. The golf course I was an assistant superintendent at closed for a month or two and was eventually sold. I was getting at least $600-$900 every check. I think it was like 60% of your salary. Maybe If you made less you received less. It was never the same across the board

I'm not defending it, but I understand why they are doing it. Layoffs are coming in leaps and bounds. People still have bills to pay. The government fears that the dominoes will start falling ending up with major industries like banks and utilities collapsing.

The oil guys that are out of work because of cheap oil now are kind of fortunate for this Corona thing. That’s a bad way to look at it though.

Im guessing next week is when we'll start seeing the blood bath in oil and gas. Only a few companies have had layoffs so far.

Pretty sure it still is. But there is a cap as well. It is also a joint state/federal and the differences from state to state are related to what the state kicks in.
At least that is my understanding. $247 is the cap in Louisiana during "normal" economic times. It's $454 in Texas

Five years ago after I got laid off I was receiving $450/week.
ETA: this was in Texas

The few companies that are running are going to have ahrd time keeping employees, because you can get paid way more to sit at home than actually working

Was just coming here to post the this. My housekeeper is claiming unemployment and she’ll be making more drawing unemployment than when she was cleaning houses for several families all week long.
