This is not "help" and may be the dumbest thing I've seen people suggest. That is merely deferred revenue. It may help with short-term cash-flow, but that gift certificate is NOT cash. You buy it now and use it later. They don't get to recognize that revenue twice.
gift cards absolutely help. Cash flow management. The smart one's are pushing gift cards and pick-ups. Gift cards are loans.

It’s almost a direct quote.

If the person almost directly quoting were a petulant child.

They’re a necessary evil for certain businesses though.

The pressure on grocery stores will be even greater and cause more social closeness at grocery stores. At least with restaurants open food choices are higher and as long as you are quickly in and out it will provide greater social distancing

How long til grocery store workers say frick this? They gonna get preferential treatment like public safety or healthcare? They gonna get more money for risking their health?

Yep. And if restaurants are completely shut down, the current situation will look like child's play.

panicking is ridiculous, but so is ignoring or being flippant about it. During the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, Philadelphia didn't cancel a military appreciation parade following WWI and 200,000 people attended. They had 16,000 deaths over 6 months out of a total population at the time of about 1.7 million. St. Louis did cancel a similar parade. They had 700 deaths over the same time frame out of a population of just under 700,000.

Direct correlation? Probably insufficient data from what I wrote here to be sure, but it does make you think about it

What's worse is they don't know how to ration food. So when they are low on essentials again. The frantic shopping will start all over again. They need to stop hoarding food or retail stores will start putting limits on all food items.

You can order take-out...or buy a gift certificate in the short-term to help out your local, preferred eatery.

Why would anyone with any sense buy a gift certificate to a place that they have no idea whether or not will still be in business by the time they get to use it?

Because I want to support local business owners.
