I think it's a bad idea to close restaurants.

The pressure on grocery stores will be even greater and cause more social closeness at grocery stores. At least with restaurants open food choices are higher and as long as you are quickly in and out it will provide greater social distancing.

You can order take-out...or buy a gift certificate in the short-term to help out your local, preferred eatery.

Went to target for a work from home monitor.

They had only 3 lanes open for checkout.

3 consecutive lanes when there are like 12 to choose from.

50 people were huddled next to each other in line.

Morons everywhere.

I concur.

just came back from my first experience with "take out only".... in a restaurant I normally sit and eat. sux. felt weird. if we are at that point, we need tanks rolling up and down the streets and gunmen ready to fire at anyone seen outside their homes.

Take out baw.

Restaurants are going to do a lot of take out. Young people don’t cook.

It will severely hurt wait staff that make most of their money off tips though.

This is not "help" and may be the dumbest thing I've seen people suggest. That is merely deferred revenue. It may help with short-term cash-flow, but that gift certificate is NOT cash. You buy it now and use it later. They don't get to recognize that revenue twice.

Or I can just eat in. It's equivalent and in some cases better than going to the crowed grocery.

This is specific to Ohio. Is this now standard to every state shutting down restaurants?

Not all gift cards work that way actually. A lot of times the money is pooled. If you buy a 10 dollar gift card at one of my places;

1.) I take your payment and it goes into my bank.
2.) The gift card processor takes the amount of the gift card from my account plus any fees associated with the purchase of the gift card.
3.). I only make money when the gift card is redeemed for products at one of my locations and I also pay merchant fees on the redemption of the gift card.

Self-serve salad/food bars are shut down at Rouse's and Langenstein's, which doesn't make sense to me. They all have a sneeze guard over the top, and tongs or big spoons to serve the food. Wash your hands when you're done and there's nothing wrong with the food.

But if I can't get lunch there, I'll go to one of the restaurants I'm not supposed to go to.

I just don't want any other states to take up this idiotic idea.

"Okay lets close restaurants so more people can congregate at grocery stores." Bad idea.

At least with restaurants open food suppliers will naturally create social distancing. Just because you are not social in a grocery store does not mean you are not distant.

What are you talking about? This absolutely helps. The cash helps provide immediate liquidity so the places can pay their employees and keep the lights on during a period where sales are more than likely going to be down.

Also, spoilage is a very real thing so for a portion of the purchase the merchant actually WILL get to realize that revenue twice.

The only change so far in the VA dining room is they closed the self-serve salad bar, the healthiest option available.

Restaruants should stay open to satisfy the public and other industries.
From each according to their ability, to each according to their need, eh comrade?

Have you seen all the Karen’s with 3 shoppings carts full of food? A ton of people I have seen at the store the past few days looked like they were preparing to go down in the cellar for the next 2 months

I have less trust in the safety of food which is delivered to my home . Never know the level of contamination that might occur so I dont use Waitr or Postmates.

I assume most people know this

Cash-flow is the benefit and is the reason for doing this...

shite's ridiculous. People are hoarding the most basic food supplies like they will be in the storm shelter for the rest of the year. Campbell's soup cleaned off the shelves, rice, flour, coffee, powdered milk, dried beans and peas???? WTF? Jeez this is not the Great Depression all over again.

Spoilage? Are you referring to gift certificates expiring or food spoilage? Food spoilage is not revenue. Payments with gift certificates are also not revenue (it is a realization of the revenue earned when the gift certificate is purchased), and expiring gift cards would not be able to be recognized for at least a year. Purchasing gift certificates is only helpful for short-term cash flow. Everyone doing this is not helpful for a business' long-term outlook. That's nonsense.

They don't. These morons actually think they're helping keep a business open by purchasing gift cards.
