In the first half, the defense is in front of our bench, so as a coaching staff, we can do a lot of thinking for them. We can call it out, tell them what they’re doing, get them in right position, get them active. In the second half, the defense is away from our bench, so we can’t tell them everything that’s going on because it’s not in front of our bench. So in the second half we usually give up a ton of points. That’s where you have to have players step up and be able to do it.”

– Coach Will Wade

This is absolutely a BS excuse for them playing bad defense and if you are having to tell them where to be at at this point in the season, you haven't done your job teaching your concepts on defense. High schoolers aren't confused about what their role is on both sides of the court much less just on defense.

Devils advocate: high schoolers play high school defenses against high school players playing high school offenses

Learned that in high school.

BS, Kentucky missed a lot of open shots in the 1st half. They made them in the 2nd.

Actually high schoolers are confused and that’s the point. Our team is extremely young and most probably aren’t used to executing real defense because they never had to in high school. If coaches cannot help them during the game it absolutely can be a disadvantage. Wade’s point is not that they don’t teach defense in practice. It’s that clearly the guys don’t all have it down well enough yet and he has to constantly adjust them during the game. Btw most high school coaches suck.

You must not watch HS Basketball.

His statement doesn't imply an excuse, FYI.

You’re actually trying to suggest that high schoolers don’t get confused on assignments.......wow

It’s possible be critical of Wade without being a complete moron

I think at this point it is pretty clear there is a disconnect between what the coach's are teaching and what the players are understanding. There is "blame" to go around on both sides, but for RIGHT NOW what they are doing isn't working.

My hope is that this stretch has caused some reevaluation because (1) there is still time to make this are REALLY, REALLY good season and (2) this team isn't far off. They are playing terrible defense and YET still in every game. If they can somehow figure out a way to knock off 5-7 ppg on the defensive end they could realistically go undefeated down the stretch of SEC play. That's the equivalent of 2-4 made FG's per game.

WW obviously knows more basketball than me but I think they should press a little more. Speed the game up and not have to rely on positional defense as much. Seems like the team plays better when the game is sped up.

Although you'd probably have to go deeper than a 7 man rotation and that doesn't seem like something he likes to do.

He’s saying that Taylor is pretty much def in the 2nd half, and that he can wave his arms enough in the first half that Taylor can understand him because he has to look at him that close.

You missed his point and if you listened to the presser after the game you could see what he’s talking about. When they are playing defense in front of the bench, the coaches do all the thinking. In the second half we have bad defenders who are getting exposed and the coaches can’t help. He said they work on it constantly but can’t make the players do it. If you say bench them, it gets worse. He did t sugar coat it nor call by name. That’s why he was so pissed at the end.

If that's true, we have no shot. Very poor excuse while exposing your own coaching.

You didn’t give us the whole quote, which is typical of these types of posts. He went on to say how the players have more responsibility to communicate with each other when they’re on defense away from their bench in the second half and how well Kentucky was able to do that, unlike us.

It wasn’t an excuse—it was just pointing out something we don’t do well: communicate on defense.

Some players are morons, plain and simple.

I can remember two guys on my team that simply could not be good defenders. They were simply too stupid. For all the repetition we did, all the drills, all the coaching, and for them to still forget simple things like coming over from the backside when someone goes baseline, or remembering to hedge a pick or allow the defender to go under the pick depending on who had the ball, they simply couldn't remember and react in a timely fashion.

Some guys are just dumb, and there's no amount of coaching that will fix it. What helps in situations where you have an idiot on the defensive side, is when others know what they are supposed to be doing, and communication on the court is constantly happening. That's what's not happening on the court with LSU, and it's why Will Wade is saying this. He shouldn't have to be the guy reminding them of everything. There should be at least 2-3 guys on the court constantly talking and saying what's happening and what to do. One would expect that main person would be Skylar. It's important to have a coach on the court, and it doesn't seem like we have that.

WW's excuse is so lame. It was so stupid, I had to read it twice to make sure I read it correctly! It's just his attempt to mask his inability to coach. He simply doesn't know how to prepare his team for games and has no clue how to make in-game adjustments.

if a coach can’t coach his team because they’re 40 feet away, there’s a serious problem.
