BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The city of Birmingham is going after an XFL team.

This plan comes one week after the XFL had their first official games, reminding many Birminghamians about the loss of the Birmingham Iron. One year ago, the now-defunct Birmingham Iron played its first game in the Alliance of American Football. The league has since been canceled having only one season under its belt.

During the XFL’s first run in 2001, Birmingham was one of the original eight cities to have league teams. At the time, the city’s team was called the Birmingham Bolts, but went defunct after the shuttering of the league’s lone season.

City Council President William Parker believes an XFL team would do well in the Magic City. Especially after fans turned out in huge numbers for the Birmingham Iron.

“I think it demonstrated that Birmingham has a great fanbase,” Parker said. “Birmingham loves football, Birmingham is truly the football capital of the South, so we want to welcome the opportunity to pursue their expansion team here coming to the city of Birmingham.”

As far as where a possible XFL team would play, Parker said he would like to see them at Legion Field starting next January, right after next year’s Super Bowl.

The old XFL team was the Thunderbolts. Is it time to move the Chargers to Legion Field?

I would like to see them in Huntsville and not Birmingham. After all, Huntsville is the city that is growing the fastest in Alabama.

Where would they play? I don't think anyone is willing to build a stadium for an XFL team.

The Birmingham metro still has over twice the amount of people that Huntsville's metro has, and Birmingham is about to have a new ~50k seat stadium.

I don't really want Birmingham to get a XFL team, but I can't imagine why they would put one in Huntsville instead.

Bad Luck? Just not an appealing area? Something went wrong and why XFL did not invite Birmingham back? That is the question to ask the XFL about it.
Also it might have something to do with T.V. market in the area? T.V. market is what got Missouri in the SEC. Key thing is T.V. market. No matter how many you filled the stadium it is all about T.V. market. That is where the XFL makes the money the most. T.V.commercials is how the XFL gets the most money.

Just wait for 2022 to play in the new stadium. Don't subject fans to Legion field for one more year.

The XFL intentionally chose cities with NFL teams for the first round. If they decide to go with cities without football franchises Birmingham will be a shoe in.

Choosing Tampa over Bham was a serious mistake. Tampa is an awful sports town.

The failure of these leagues was NOT because of B'ham. That city has given great support to every team that's been there.

First year goal is to show the media that there is a potential return on investment (hence, with exception of St. Louis [and they're crushing there] all NFL cities in larger media markets).

Legion Field is a complete shithole

If there was a 30000 seat football or soccer stadium around Hoover XFL would do well.

Yeah, Legion Field.

But Birmingham recently broke ground on a new ~50k seat stadium next to the BJCC/Top Golf. I believe UAB will move there once it's completed.

UAB does have a 5-6k seat soccer stadium that they and Birmingham Legion use.

2 many teams as it is.

The OL and QB play for some has been really bad, especially the OL play. Adding more teams dilutes what is already watered down.

Give the league a chance to improve before adding teams. Or it will go the 3 years VM has budgeted it for and then it will fold.

Why won’t the state of Alabama consider a team in Montgomery? Is it because of the metropolitan area surrounding Birmingham that makes it more attractive?
