Marcel Brooks Position Going Forward

What's the rant's take on if he will be a safety or linebacker in 2020? I assume linebacker but not sure how much weight he has been able to put on?

he could be in a Jacoby Stevens/Isaiah Simmons type role this year, as an all around athlete. Multiple players and coaches have said that he has freakish ability, and I can see him as a Delpit-type, in the box safety, but also as an outside backer/Edge guy if he gains 15-20lbs

The game has evolved to a point that defensive coordinators want as many guys as possible who are hybrid. Classifying one of these guys as a linebacker or a safety does not make sense. On some plays Brooks will be a LB, and on some he will be a safety. If this confuses you then it's working. The point is to confuse the QB.
A good DC in today's game wants two down linemen (or 3), two corners (or 3) and 5 to 7 hybrids.

I agree with penrod's assessment.

Agreed. Lots of people worried about the 4-3 defense but we were mostly in 4-2-5 this year

i agree with the hybrid role but, hes been a pass rush specialist for a while now... Im wondering how well he can cover as a safety, (you still have to cover guys as a DB) just wondering what kind of experience he has in that.. I think adding about 20-25lbs is in his best interest and makes the move to OLB/S kid is a freak athlete and im really excited about him next year but he is gonna have to put on some weight unless he moves directly to safety and i dont see that happening..

He was a true freshman this year and was utilized as a “pass rush specialist” because of his athleticism; that was just the best way to get him on the field early.

Spring will be big for him
He hasn't ever covered anyone from the S position
Can he even do that well enough?
LB probably a better fit for him, probably needs to add some weight

LB'er probably, he should put on the weight to play OLB.
Yeah I see people say that alot and how much more weight do you think he should put on and why? My guess is he's probably 205 right now. His speed is one of his greatest attributes and the guy can lay the wood as it is.

Move to a 4-3 is gonna be great for him.
He’s a will backer through and through

He'll be fine once he fills out to around 225 to 230, that's all he needs to an effective OLB. He'll still have his speed and everything at that weight.

Essentially, today's DCs want enough bulk up front to control the line while putting the best athletes behind them to defend the RPO stuff. Speed is imperative. If you ain't got it, then you won't see much PT.

Well, you can see why when offenses are trending towards what LSU’s looked like last year. The same personnel can provide many looks, sometimes with players changing their roles, always looking for mismatches.
If you can field hybrid personnel then you have a lot of room to adapt your scheme to theirs without creating more holes.

Brooks is too small to play linebacker.
He needs to become a strong safety so he can blitz through the A & B gaps like Chad Jones used to do.
I'm kind of envisioning Jacoby Stevens playing both the will linebacker spot and the strong safety spot next season. Where in the 4-3 formation, Stevens will be in the will linebacker spot and in the 4-2 formation, he will play the strong safety spot.
Meanwhile, I envision Marcel Brooks coming in to play the strong safety spot when LSU is in 4-3 formation and Stevens is in the will linebacker spot.
