“Other” Pro Leagues in America

I wasn’t alive for the USFL, barely remember NFL Europe (besides the teams being in Madden)
But we see all these other pro football leagues. Did any of the other sports try it out?Are there any other pro leagues in the making? Anyone got any good stories of these? Or the other pro football leagues ?

The ABA was pretty successful in that they were able to get a merger with the NBA. Lasted almost a decade. That's where the Spurs, Nets, Nuggets and Pacers came from.

In terms of OP's stories, Loose Balls by Terry Pluto is the greatest collection of ABA stories.
My favorite is Marvin Barnes getting an itinerary that had a plane trip that crossed a time zone, so the schedule showed the flight leaving after it arrived. Barnes refused to board a "time machine." Even after 30 minutes of team personnel explaining the concept of time zones, he said "**** that, I ain't getting on no time machine" and rented a car and made the drive.

Completely forgot about that one. I guess it's because I pretty much deleted that from my mind when the ABA wouldn't allow the Flint Tropics in the NBA even though they finished 4th and averaged over 2k fans per game.

In 1974 there was the World Football league. I only remember because they signed Larry Csonka, and Paul Warfield. It was right about when I started watching football. I was around 7.

There have been a few pro Track & Field leagues over the years where there is team scoring like college track. There is one now called NTFL (National Track & Field League). None of the leagues last very long so I'm not sure why people keep starting new leagues.

Apparently Barnes wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. This from his college days:

Major League Rugby (MLR) just kicked off their 3rd year last week. Have expanded from 6 teams to 12 since founding in 2018.
They're fun matches to should fill the contact sport niche during NFL and NCAA football off-season.
Definitely make or break time for the league. I think franchise owners had to secure funding for 3 years of operating expenses before starting a team.

There was PRO Rugby that was founded about 5-6 years ago and didn't make it past the second season.
But currently the only professional sides in the US are the MLR teams. USA has international teams in 7's and 15's and that's what you'll see on TV and in the Olympics.

The World Hockey Association was big in the 70’s. It produced the Whalers, Jets, Nordiques, and Oilers. Also a very ‘colorful’ and fun league to read up on.
I mean, the AFL and ABA are obvious.
There are tons of Arena Football leagues over the years.
The old Pacific Coast League in the last century were pretty much a 3rd major league. Then the Dodgers and Giants moved, and that was that.

It'd be cool if they did like an NBA all-star game type deal where 4 athletes (1 sprinter, 1 distance runner, 1 thrower, and 1 jumper) drafted teams and held a scored meet for like charity or something. Have it be IAAF sanctioned with a couple cool relays thrown in that aren't often run (hurdle shuttle, sprint medley, etc.). I know this has nothing to do with the thread topic but still.
