The parking spot in question is #140 in the above picture.

quote:

San Francisco is famously expensive, and this parking space selling for $100,000 is nearly half the cost of the average US home.

This parking spot in San Francisco's South Beach neighborhood has been listed since mid-December, and the price isn't necessarily outlandish. Realtor Bill Williams told SFGate that another space in the same garage sold for $90,000 in November.

In the listing, Williams emphasizes the prime location of the spot. " Great parking spot for investor clients, 1 block from the ballpark!" The listing also starts out with a call to "PARK YOUR MONEY." "It's a safe place to park your money," Williams told SFGate. "It could be a nice hedge against the stock market dropping."

Spot 140 in the garage could be a sound investment, given that the current owners rent that space out for $300 a month.

And, in case the buyer somehow thinks they've found the deal of the century for an apartment, the listing clarifies "To be clear: This is for a PARKING SPACE ONLY."

$300 in monthly rent is only like a 3.6% annual return on your $100K investment. Kinda meh...if you ask me.

Stocks fall, people are losing their jobs, and he thinks they are going to go to baseball games and pay enough in parking to offset $100k?

It only takes one buyer with more money than they know what to do with.

Can’t believe they were only charging $300/mo for parking in downtown SF. Most places in downtown NOLA are $200-$250.

I'm a San Franciscan. I can't help it, I was born here and my family is here. I pay $1600 for a 1 bed 1 bath 430 sq ft place to myself that's an in-law. This is supposedly the San Francisco dream lol. The caveat is I cannot sublet this place and it says in my lease no visitors beyond 72 hours! I actually hosted a girl from France I'm casual with. She came for 2 weeks (Ha) and a few days after she left I got a stern email from my landlord that lives in the other side of the home about the visitor.

Can't wait to live in the South without any regulations! Don't tread on me!

Canada's different, in a way.

During one of the oil booms,a downtown parking garage had two parking spaces between large cement posts. Catacorner in the two spaces was one brand new beautiful Bentley. On the wall behind the Bentley was a sign that said "Don't get bent out of shape. I bought both these spaces for this car. The car is worth this effort."

I know people in Spain, France, Portugal, who simply own a number of spots like these, and rent them out. It´s like rental homes, they make money, and these things are like real estate (you can refi and pocket the capital gains).

Deeded spots are usually about $35k now in city neighborhoods.
