I'm not sure this new girl is the reincarnation of Lal. It's highly suggested but I'm not there. It's too easy. If Data is a "rebellious" as his father Dr. Soong It would not surprise me if Data constructed 2 androids secretly. Lal was constructed in the same manner.
I have another theory. The android Twins are NOT Data's kids. I am thinking they are Data and Lore downloaded into these new bodies. That's the current trend in the world: 007 going to be a gal, in Dr. Who we have a female Doctor, in Star Wars they went Girl Power...
It would be nice if it was Lal but I'm not buying it just yet.

I get all of the history but the interviewer is suggesting at the time of the Romulan exodus, the Federation is still enemies. What supports that? As I said, recent history would suggest that the Federation and Romulans would be at a very different place after the Dominion War where millions of lives were lost standing side-by-side with a time enemy.
That would be like Japan suddenly needing a mass evacuation and the US says screw them because you were once a mortal enemy...

I don't like how they Federation has suddenly become the "bad guys".
Right now we have a naive Admiral toeing the Federation line and a Commodore and Lieutenant who are Romulan moles. Other than that, you have a Federation that was possibly over-reactionary to Romulans in need and the android attack on Mars. It's fairly obvious that the series will go into finding the real reasons behind the android attack and what the Romulans are really up to. The biggest shock would be if the series didn't end with the Federation giving Picard a medal for setting things right (again).

I don't think it is. They haven't touched on that other than Picard reminiscing that Data always wanted a daughter.
Hopefully she truly is a new "person" taken from Data's essence without his knowledge. That would make for a much better story than Data "becoming" two women.

My view of the Federation is a cautionary tale told in DS9 when a military coup was attempted under the guise of a Dominion incursion when a virtual military martial law was conducted and citizens were been "screened". We even had a Federation Starship (the Lakota) firing on the Defiant because Captain Benteen was told the Dominion had taken over and an all-out civil war almost broke out.
Fortunately Sisko exposed the conspiracy and the Federation prevails. As to your thoughts on the ongoing themes, true. But it's always been to a relegated few and not the entire Federation. (BTW, Admiral Pressman was right...LOL).

I don't know about Vulcan. I don't see how they can operate with this timeline of Romulus being destroyed and Vulcan not unless a new timeline has been created.

First episode impressions:
It doesn't feel at all like Star Trek. It's too affected by the JJ/Kurtzman Trek era, both thematically and in terms of tone and cinematography. The Bourne Identity fight sequences and edgy tones are far from what Star Trek is supposed to be.
The politics are impossible to ignore. Anyone who says it's in line with classic Trek disagrees with the people who made this. It's mostly just more refugee porn, but I sucked it up and carried on.
Why are there 20th century style TV news shows and interviewers in this? That was really out of place for Star Trek as well.
So the lesbian search computer hologram chick knows what Picard has hanging on the wall in his home? Was anyone else weirded out by this?
Whoever did the painting is a good painter. Great expression.
People touching and controlling holographic projections in the air seems to be in a lot of futuristic shows and movies, like Minority Report, etc. I this a forthcoming technology?
The plot seems to be a mix of what someone has called "the amazing girl who is the key to everything" with some thematic ripping off of Blade Runner. The prolonged fight scene is out of place and serves no useful purpose except to be action filler.

Effects are solid, especially the space effects.
Is that an elven Jedi samurai in the "later this season" montage? Somewhere, some nerd's nuts just exploded.

There are two main timelines/realities (put mirror universe aside). There is the prime timeline (all the tv shows and non JJ Abrams movies). Then there is the Kelvin timeline which was introduced by the JJ Abrams movies.
Romulus was destroyed in the prime timeline and when Nero's ship went back in time created the Kelvin timeline. Vulcan was destroyed by Nero in the Kelvin timeline not the prime one.
Picard is set in the prime timeline just like Discovery and all the other tv shows. So Vulcan should still be intact.

Why do they keep insisting on having characters use the word "dude?" That is so off-putting, as is the cursing.
The opening looks like a Marvel opening or Netflix Original.
Would a Romulan chick actually say "cheeky frickers?" WTF is this shite? How do you get Irish Romulans?
A frick scene. We gonna get robot titties next? Oops, nope, but a sweet underwear shot. I wish we'd have gotten to see Dr. Crusher in her underwear.
More cursing. What are these people trying to prove?

The ominous Federation CIA lady is ridiculous. Every scene with her is like something out of a spy movie or crime drama. Holy shite, she just suggested that they might have to whack Picard. This is awful.
Full disclosure, this is bullshite. The whole thing looks like they decided they were just going to make this any way they wanted, Star Trek fans be damned (seeme to be a running theme with these people), but what they wanted seems to be little more than a lot of formulas from other sci fi works and franchises not named Star Trek. It uses hackneyed terminology like "black boxed" and "romulan anti-synth ops" like it wants to be another show, and many of the characters seem like they belong in other shows.
I suspect this show began its life as something else, and then morphed into Star Trek after some deals were made and Stewart signed on. Even without the numerous out-of-character elements, it's just poorly written and bad.

Star Trek TNG never really showed everyday life. Hell, did we ever see a toilet in the old Star Trek shows? Star Trek TNG was a very sanitized environment.

Star Trek TNG never really showed everyday life.
Star Trek has had journalists appear in the past. Jake Sisko was a traditional journalist in every sense of the word. But after decades of Star Trek showing reporters and journalists from different planets, now it's non-Trek to have one in the show.
In the 60's Star Trek had hippies. In the 80's they had videogames. Now it's 2020 and they show a CNN/FOX type of reporter. The show has always reflected the times in which it was produced.
