quote:First, those people aren’t being tested hardly at all. And second, those testimonials don’t sell. Media wants the drama of the dying “healthy” but fat 45 year old. And honestly, so does the public. If we didn’t eat that shite up, the media wouldn’t feel the need to constantly make things seem worse.
If 80% of cases are like this, where are these testimonials?

Then why are you posting in the thread? I’ll never understand why people use their time and energy to post in threads they don’t agree with or something they’re not interested in. You can easily scroll right past it.

The lack of sensationalism in “I feel fine” means it won’t be circulated by anyone.
In fairness to the media (and I'm not one to defend them) - who would watch this?
They broadcast the horror stories because the people want the horror stories. There is a reason Fox and MSNBC put on these ridiculous pundits all day to talk about how Joe Biden is on his literal deathbed and how Trump is probably 5th cousin to Hitler instead of reporting on how some conglomerate with impacts on the world economy went belly up in Ukraine.
There is some chicken-egg to the media-public conversation, but we drive this stuff.

Everyone should be interested to learn this isn't the killer it has been made it to be by some
And like clock work some doomsdayer downvotes this

That was my point. The media isn’t interested in culling hysteria. In fact, they want the opposite.

Exactly so I think in social media and regular media these mild cases, if there truly are any and I believe there are, are buried because people with mild symptoms truly don’t know if it’s a cold or Corona because they haven’t been tested

The problem is people not being honest with the facts. Even if your goal is to just reduce anxiety there are better ways to do it than to be dishonest.
That will only lead to people panicking more when they come to the realization that what they thought was true isn’t anymore.
ETA: I’m not talking about the media and social media. They may be out of control, I don’t know, I’m not even tuned into those things. I’m just talking about people in this thread sharing facts and honesty.

The media is driven monetarily to continue the charade because it keeps bringing those who are most anxious back for another 12 hours of “here is a multitude of information that serves no purpose but to heighten your anxiety so you continue watching.”
This thread is no different.
At least the media’s underlying reason is money.

This. And people who want it to be taken seriously are more than willing to prop up the horror stories so people will stay home

The economic downturn can’t be untangled from corona not matter what the public’s reaction is. If we go about business as usual the system will be overwhelmed throwing us into even more chaos then we have now and eventually forcing us to do what we are doing now

Seriously though H1N1 so far was a much larger issue than this one. Maybe CV19 eclipses H1N1, but it has a long ways to go.
Right now at a minimum this virus is 10 times deadlier than H1N1 and just as effective at transmission. If you look at the same points in time from initial cases to progression at the 90 day mark, this looks about ten times worse as far as fatality rate.

I think you're confusing maximum and minimum. As testing ramps up, the mortality rate will only go down.

I’m just talking about people in this thread sharing facts and honesty.
Knowing the number of Italians serves you no purpose. Same for Spain.
It is a false belief that the information you are constantly looking up offers you any benefits.
You stated earlier that continuing to post and read all of this information serves the purpose of furthering the idea that this situation is critical and dire and everyone should be aware.
You and many others in this thread already understand that.
So, what purpose does this thread serve for those who are already aware of that concept? What additional knowledge are you gaining?
None.
You are continuously tricking yourself into believing that staying up to date on every death in Italy or the spread in Spain offers you any new or insightful information.
It is nothing more than a subconscious tactic to convince yourself you are in control.
You are in medicine. You should recognize that.
This thread should be anchored and the OT would be better off for it.

He’s just picked a new talking point that he knows will last another month or more so he can continue arguing. If total deaths pass that of H1N1 he will move onto another disease as a benchmark. I predict... “well it still hasn’t killed as many people as the flu in a year”
