Scruffy isn't the problem in this thread.

He's been doing exactly that. Not sure what poster you're thinking of.

The problem is that even in the middle guys take one slant or the other
For example, Malik is in the "take it seriously" crowd (I probably am too) and Darth and Scruffy are the "pretty overblown" crowd even though all of them are relatively civil and not saying objectively false things

Because there is still a ton of people who think this is the flu or H1N1. Again, people like you are creating a false dichotomy. It’s either the flu or it’s everyone is in a panic.

This thread serves no purpose. It gives no useable information, reaches people nothing, and does nothing to assuage any fears or anxiety.
This thread only heightens anxiety.
Tell me what is a useable bit of information in this thread.
What purpose does it serve?
This has nothing to do with hyping or downplaying the situation.P

This thread compiles info from other countries I'd have to search for
I'm not saying it's particularly valuable, but if you can look past the histrionics on both sides it has good info.

From here on out, we are all just numbers on a wall. It will be hilarious watching the weak sheep melt over the next few weeks.

Idk, I feel like if this thread gets stickied it'll just be a magnet for baws to come in and say "you're shutting the economy down for a flu!"

At a minimum, it is just info for info’s sake, which only heightens the anxiety of those reading it, which is why the thread is so negatively slanted.
And that is a studied societal reaction to situations like this.
There is nothing positive in this Ouroboros situation y’all have created for yourselves.

More people will be hurt by the over-reaction and economic downturn, than will get Corona.
This thread serves no purpose but to scare people it seems.
Negative news is praised and positive news is scorned.
Seriously though H1N1 so far was a much larger issue than this one. Maybe CV19 eclipses H1N1, but it has a long ways to go.

You can change that. Don’t argue with the trolls, just educate us from a physician point of view.

There is no new info that will change what you should do.
Wash hands and go to the hospital if you feel you need medical care.
There is no new info that will be released daily.
The idea that, if you don’t read about it daily, you will miss something important is a completely fake viewpoint that our constant information overload has created.
Reading about this at a maximum of 1 hr a day, or even every few days, will benefit you significantly more.
Pick up a new hobby.
If any of you do that, trust me, you’ll feel better about this situation and you’ll thank me.

Scruffy, a dumb question
Are coronaviruses related to influenza or vice versa in any recognized way?
I know "it's not the flu" and I'm certainly not trying to get ammo to say that it is, but at some academic level could either be put into the other category ("influenza A could be technically categorized as a type of coronavirus") or are they entirely disconnected and it's objectively false/lazy to refer to it as the "flu"?

The world did not shut down, we washed our hands more. TP shortage never happened.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 61 million people became infected in the U.S., and 12,469 died. Global estimates put the death count at around 575,400. Swine flu was declared officially over by 2010.
6,513 deaths worldwide so far with CV19. At this point it has been around since Q4 of last year. We are close to having this virus around half a year. H1N1 lasted for about 1.5 years.

They aren’t even the same phylum.
Both are viruses, but it would be like comparing a human and a salamander, probably even more different.
Yes, they are both animals, but are significantly different.
They aren’t even on the same evolutionary pathway.

I am old enough to remember the AIDS pandemic, Ebola 1 and 2 pandemic, H1N1, SARS, MERS and that time we were all going to die in a Nuclear War.
We are all going to be OK and we all need to get back to work.
Losing months of productivity only helps those who have and will actually kill the have nots.

Aren’t SARS and MERS coronaviruses?
