it should be a little easier to develop a vaccine than flu because of lower mutation rates
Is there a vaccine for the common cold or flu yet?

Scruffy - I have a question. Not questioning the severity of all this. Just genuinely curious. If the flu does kill so many more people, do we not see the same overwhelm in hospitals during flu season? Do flu deaths not require the same level of care in hospitals that COVID19 does?
Flu doesn't generally require ICU respirator treatment. That is the issue.
There are a VERY small number in the US relative to the population. That's the big concern and what it crushing Italy right now.

Rhinovirus (common cold) has over 200 strains so no, not really.
What do you think the flu shot is each year? It's a vaccine they make for the presumptive most common strain for that season.

Hopefully, we'll soon have an effective drug that can help people who get sick.
I agree. If we find something even moderately effective it can bring the critical rate down and dramatically reduce the stress on the system. It doesn’t have to be a miracle cure.

Methylprednisolone has been very effective with cases that develop ARDS.
Bases on the patient 31 article, people need to take this seriously and quarantine for a week or two.
If you have the ability to work from home, do it. You may not be at high risk but others are and will be for a while.
Have a bunch of idiots at our office going in trying to be ignorant hero's when our massive company offered WFH until April 30th.
Really hate people sometimes.

Right now at a minimum this virus is 10 times deadlier than H1N1 and just as effective at transmission. If you look at the same points in time from initial cases to progression at the 90 day mark, this looks about ten times worse as far as fatality rate.
Holy hell this is a major scare tactic. I guess we should ignore all the data points and use our feelings.
No matter how hard you try, we are not getting the pandemic you wish for.

What data points? Be specific. Maybe instead of saying he is ignoring data points you could just post them to support your belief. Crazy thought huh

I find it very typical of this thread that the upvote downvote ratio between his post and mine is what it is
And he didn't even bother to respond

Then why are you posting in the thread?
Because this thread is more hurtful than helpful.
Some people want to see the world burn and some of us are here to toss a pail of water on it.

How is it you see these posts but continually ignore the ones all of two pages ago?

Judging by the DVs you got, you do not get to decide

Generally agree with you, but please reask the question or STFU about it.

Swine flu first case in the US was April. By June there were 1 million cases. We aren’t close to that curve.

Downvotes don't mean anything in this thread. Lots of informational and 100% true posts get downvoted.

No thanks. The posts don't disappear and they aren't buried a hundred pages ago.
